The best wed be able to get would be a fringe prospect plus a team picking up 1mil of his 2010 salary. If the 2010 off season market looks anything like that of 2009, nobodys going to pay 2.5 mil for Aaron Miles.

I think they would. There were multiple teams interested in him at the price Hendry ended up paying at the time the Cubs signed him.

We wouldn't get much of a prospect for him either way, but if we basically get a bag of balls for him, I think somebody would take the 2010 salary.

That said, the Cubs aren't trading Miles, I don't think.

Did his agent tell you that or Jim Hendry? Nobody was signing anybody at the time they got Miles. The only active teams were the Yankees signing the big tickets items, and everybody else was sitting on their hands waiting out the market. And Hendry got aggressive going after an unnecessary utility man who was non-tendered by a division rival that has to actually think when they spend money.

Plus Hendry has a history of overspending for role players when he really doesn't have to. Had he missed out on Miles he could have gone into the season with Scales or Nate Spears as the backup MI with probably the same production.

The reports that I read said that Miles had an offer from the Cards for about the same money when he signed with the Cubs.

Yeah, I remember the Cards had an offer (and remember, LaRussa is on record loving Miles) and I think one or two teams had lesser offers on the table as well.

The Cardinals non-tendered him. There's virtually no way they found it a better deal to sign him to a 2Y/5M deal vs. whatever shitty arbitration award he'd get.

Here's what St. Louis Today's Derrick Goold said about it:

The Cubs pursuit of Miles intensified the weekend after Christmas, and the entire deal hinged around the Cubs being able to deal second baseman/super utility fielder Mark DeRosa. When they completed that swap with Cleveland, they made their offer to Miles formal. The Cardinals entered at the 11th hour, and Miles said the offer was both a surprise and a complication. He spent many hours laboring over the decision. Miles said the offer from the Cardinals was a two-year deal and that the difference between it and the Cubs’ offer could have been $1 million. Several sources described the Cardinals’ offer as worth a total of around $4.3 million, or $600,000 less guaranteed than the Cubs’ contract.

This was after Miles signed with the Cubs, so he wouldn't have been making up the offer to try to ratchet up the supposed interest. LaRussa wanted him back, whether it was logical or not.

Also, from the same story:

Eight teams had shown interest in Miles leading up to the Cardinals becoming the ninth on the day he signed with the Cubs, his agent said.

This was from his agent, but again the story was written after he signed with the Cubs - after it would have been beneficial for the agent to throw out fake offer estimates.

Well, he had gotten a 400,000 raise after 07 in his second arbitration year. He then had easily his best season before the 3rd arbitration year which is normally the year that players can get a bigger bump than normal. He probably could have gotten 2.5-3 million in arbitration.

The report said that the Cardinals were offering something like 2 years, 4 million...which I still find strange even with that arbitration number.

It's never not beneficial for an agent to make it look like there is great interest in their client. If an agent can dupe people into thinking 9 teams wanted their guy in an offseason when no teams were signing guys, he looks like a pretty good agent in the eyes of some perspective clients.

It's all meaningless nonsense. It was a horrible decision by Hendry to aggressively pursue a dime a dozen utility man and give him a 2 year contract.

Even if the 9 teams interested wasn't true (and it may well have not been), it's still accurate that the Cardinals were in on Miles and that there may be a market for his services at $2.5 million.

I've also never said Hendry should have given that deal to Miles. I've opposed it since day 1.

Exactly. And Hendry seems to believe that it is a requirement to have one of these types of contracts at all times.

Neifi, Izturis, Miles, etc....

Giants could dump Aurilia?

Last week, as the Giants had two roster moves pending and speculation abounded that Rich Aurilia's job was in danger, Aurilia did not give it a second thought - or a first thought. "I kind of totally put that out of my mind," the 37-year-old utility man said Tuesday. "You can't come back to them and say, 'No, you can't do this to me,' so why worry about it?" Well, Aurilia probably had some reason to worry, given his sub-.200 average and the Giants' willingness the past few years to eat contracts of older players who were not producing. But the Giants still see value in Aurilia's ability to hit off the bench and play the corner infield positions. -- SF Chronicle

Aurilia hasn't done much of anything since 2006. Gaetti had at least been decent before landing with the Cubs.

For prorated league minumum, I cant see any harm on taking out a flier on Aurilia. He cant be any worse than what we have now. In fact Id be shocked if he was dumoed and Hendry didnt sign him.

While I agree with you, I can see Lou and Hendry being interested if he is released. A veteran who can play 3B and pinch hit without costing us players or much money might be hard to pass up.

Yeah, they may be. If they sign him, though, I'll be even more stunned that Durham remains unsigned.

If we really want someone right now, the most aquireble would probably be Garrett Atkins. Not only has he been brutal for the Rockies this season, but they want to give Ian Stewart the job. As bad as hes been and as bad as they want to move him and his .188/.264/.273 line, Id offer up something like Kevin Hart and 1 or 2 performance based PTBNL. If Jason Marquis can look like an ace there, maybe Hart or Heilman can too. With the Rockies position player log jam and the fact that theyre an NL tea, theyd have little use for Jake Fox so we could focus on then trying to move him for a reliever.

Atkins may not be the ideal choice, but a change of scenery could do him well.

Fontenot has gone .344/.353/.469 in the last 14 days. Hopefully this continues and they can get something out of 2B until Ramirez gets back.

According to the Denver Post, Rockies third baseman Garrett Atkins could soon face a demotion to Triple-A.

"There comes a point where we have to make a decision," manager Jim Tracy said Wednesday. "We are to the third of June now, and we are talking about getting to the point of a couple of hundred at-bats." Atkins has hit just .188/.264/.273 in 176 at-bats. Ian Stewart would make sense as his fill-in.

Seriously, we need to make them an offer. Hes been awful thus far, but I cant see him being much worse than what weve paraded out there.

It's rare when something this good falls into your lap. Hendry needs to get on the phone asap.
