At what point does MLB step in and give the Trib a deadline? They can't just let this drag on and on and hold the payroll hostage forever.

MLB probably thinks it's a good thing to keep the Cubs payroll stagnant.

But in reality these negotiations have not held the payroll hostage. It's risen steadily since it was announced they were up for sale. It's Hendry's fault for committing the 2009/2010 dollars that he committed if he feels held hostage at this point.

Why, its in their best interest just to have the Cubs in the playoffs.

Bud Selig used to own the Brewers.

Keep prices down.

I partially agree that Hendry has nobody to blame but himself for how he has committed a generous payroll. At the same time, I can't blame him for committing all his available resources up front. If the Cubs' budget is run anything like other corporations, unspent dollars are often removed from the budget altogether. Maybe he felt that if he didn't spend the money, he was going to lose it anyway.

If MLB doesn't set a deadline soon won't the bankruptcy court liquidate the Cubs at some point? I'm not a legal expert, but it seems to make sense.

Yes, if he was given a $105m budget in 2007 it woulddn't have made sense to only spend $80m, but that doesn't mean he had to commit future dollars.

Hendry operated under the assumption that he had to win in 07/08 to remain employed past that point.

Ricketts, Tribune Closer to Cubs Deal

Tom Ricketts may be back in the driver's seat to buy the Chicago Cubs.

The Chicago Tribune quoted sources as saying the Ricketts family and Tribune Co. have made "good progress" recently in negotiations to reach an agreement on the sale of the Cubs, Wrigley Field and a 25 percent stake in Comcast SportsNet Chicago.

Talks stalled more than a month ago when the two sides could not agree on some issues, including how to value the team's broadcast rights.

"We're closing the gap," a source told the newspaper. "The attitudes are much more positive."

One reason talks have stepped up could be because the Tribune Co. reopened talks with another bidding group led by New York investor Marc Utay. The Ricketts family was selected as the winning bidder five months ago in a drawn-out auction that began with 10 offers.

David Kaplan's Twitter:

I have learned exclusively that the sale of the Cubs should be agreed to with the Ricketts family withing 2 weeks.

Look for MLB to approve the sale of the Cubs to the Ricketts family by the end of August! Breaking News from David Kaplan

And now the obvious question, can the Ricketts family start authorizing payroll decisions as soon as the sale is agreed upon or does MLB have to approve the sale before that can happen?

Good. Now go rescue Jake Peavy.

How about we spend that money on a big mothertrucking bat?

That's what I'd do.

As much as I'd love to add Peavy to the team, starting pitching is the least of our concerns right now. A bat and another bullpen arm rank higher on the list of needs.

I kinda hope this drags on to February now and Utay gets the Cubs just so Kaplan can be incredibly wrong. Hate this clueless moron.

I hate Kaplan too, but this is one thing I hope hes right on just so the sale can be over

Tribune Co. finalizes deal to sell Cubs, Wrigley

http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/07/cubs-sales-deal-finalized.html

Does this impact us right now in any way? Can we now make some moves that we couldn't before - or are we just a bit further along towards that goal??

It depends on what the terms of the agreement was. Ricketts still would have to get the Tribune's permission to authorize any moves. My guess is the Tribune won't authorize it, so the situation probably hasn't changed until both MLB and the courts approve the sale. There is a small chance though that Ricketts negotiated a little bit of wiggle room on the payroll that he could have during this process.

We're a good bit further along towards that goal. But it probably depends on how much Ricketts really wants to improve payroll. Acquired businesses very frequently begin doing the bidding of the new owner before sales are fully complete, as long as the agreement is strong. Once the Trib and Ricketts agree and then pass that news along to the others who need to review it, that would be the case.

Wasn't Ricketts hand picked by Selig? There's no way he doesn't get approved. As long as fan boy Ricketts says OK, Hendry sould be able to add some payroll now.
