So there's still 2 bids on the table, meaning we're really back at square 1.

=D>

This is becoming quite awesome.

I'm guessing if anything happens with the Ricketts bid (doesn't get 75% of owners vote), he has the Utay bid to fall back on. Just a guess, but at least this way if anything fell through he is ready to move on to the next one.

From what I hear, Zell isnt the main obstacle for either Ricketts or Utay, its the bankruptcy court and the MLB owners. they might not like that both bids are relying on a lot of borrowed money and not enough upfront. While Utays bid is larger, Ricketts involves more money upfront.

Now If Ricketts and Utay werre serious about putting this team on top, theyd buy the team together and pump a load of money into it.

Dave Kaplan 720 am is reporting sale finalized.

Finalized to whom? I would assume it would be Ricketts if that is all he said. But, I have a hard time believing that the bankruptcy court moved that quickly and that MLB has already approved the new owners.

If they file bankruptcy, can they break any player contracts? (I'm looking at you, Soriano.)

:beg:

Too bad the banks cant claim players as assets like they do with houses and cars. I can just imagine the repo man dragging off the entire Cubs outfield in the middle of a game :rotfl:

Kap says the sale will be announced today with Ricketts being the new owner:

As I first reported a week ago last Friday, the Ricketts family will become owners of the fabled Cubs franchise.

According to excellent sources, I expect a deal with Tom Ricketts and his family to be announced later today.

As soon as the deal is approved by bankruptcy court as well as Major League Baseball the family will assume control of the team.

Deja vu. I feel like I've lived this moment before.

Does that mean that Utay will be listed as another suitor tomorrow. This is like the movie Groundhog Day. Its getting a little (as cousin Balky used to say) ree-deek-u-lous,

The article has been updated, and the words "to be announced later today" have a line through them.

Lets not hold our breath on this one.

Notice how something can be reported and nobody believes it or is surprised when it gets pulled back?

This is why I hate the rush to be first among major beat sports reporters in the 24-hour news cycle. It shreds credibility all to heck.

UPDATE: The Ricketts family has been told by the Tribune that they have a deal. However, I'm told now there will not be a press conference or statement today. The announcement will come after Major League Baseball approves the deal.

Too bad this isnt the old west where a mans handshake was as good as cash.
