I just don't know why Bettemen is fighting against putting one of two more teams back in a country that lives in breathes hockey.

Probably because Canada has had its own problems keeping franchises, as it was the move away from those smaller cities that couldn't compete that started the process of going south in the first place. A couple years ago people feared for the future of Edmonton. It's not a no-brainer.

Suffice to say, IMO Phx and Atlanta are not long-term viable options to support NHL teams.

I actually think the real solution is to contract. I think it is possible in the NHL because the owners have already proven that they are willing to do whatever it takes to win a labor situation. Bettman, however, has proven that he will not concede that Southern expansion was probably not a great idea. He thinks a salary cap will help these teams compete. Which it will help them compete, but it will not make the fans give a rip.

On a side note similar to the subject. Less than 10 yrs ago there was talk of Carolina moving to Detroit. I think the local economy in Detroit makes that idea completely unthinkable now.

the penguins cheat

i watched this game live, it was pretty funny... they kept showing two views that were inconclusive, and right after it was ruled no goal, they showed a "new" angle that showed it crossing the line. you can see that in the video in the link.

"We saved that one."

lol.

Edmonton Oilers goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin will have surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back and will be out indefinitely.

The team said Wednesday that the former Blackhawks goalie will have the operation in Los Angeles on Thursday. The Oilers didn't provide a timeline for his recovery.

I still can't believe he got that contract, or that people wanted him back in Chicago.

Nobody really wanted us to give him the contract that Edmonton gave him. But given the choice of him or Huet, yeah, Khabi looked pretty good.

Just like with Havlat, everyone could see this type of season coming.

Not really. He was an old dude who missed a ton of time with the Blackhawks already and only had a good season when he split time 50/50. He wasn't coming back on a 1 year deal, and Huet was unmovable. It was never a rational option.

another wild 2-0 win (with an empty net goal) for the devils... God what a boring team they are.

As much credit as the Red Wings get for being such a good team for so long, I think what New Jersey has done over the last 15+ years is pretty amazing. Broduer is their only constant player through those years. They have never been a big spender on players. They have changed coaches at least 3 times. They just bore you to death on a consistent basis for 15+ yrs.

Of course. I was just saying that notwithstanding the contract situations, I think we all would have wanted Khabi back over Huet this year. But yeah, not for more than a year.

God these refs blow. we score on a 2 on 1 but away from the play gagne - who's had concussions - gets elbowed in the head by malkin, grabs malkin and gets a double minor for roughing and high sticking, even though he didn't high stick malkin. so instead of 2-0 it's pp pens and they score. what a bunch of horse [expletive].

why do they have eddie olcyzk do penguins games on nbc? they might as well just pick a random pens fan out of the crowd; they'd probably be just as objective as eddie o.

Why does Tim McCarver ever get to do a Cards game on Fox?

officiating in this league is [expletive] horrendous. flyers scored a goal to make it 3-0; kerry fraser told roloson that the puck was behind him and in the net before scott hartnell made contact - which was completely correct. then the refs huddle up for 2 minutes, call no goal and hartnell goes to the box, isles score. WHAT THE [expletive].

early word is Giguere and Phaneuf on their way to Toronto

edit: Phaneuf, Sjostrom and Auley to Toronto for Hagman, Stajan, Mayers and White

I think this puts the Hawks in the drivers seat for Kovalchek. If they want to go that route.
