do not know if I should put this here or in the olympic thread.

http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/vancouver/blog/fourth_place_medal/post/Russia-over-Canada-U-S-in-key-pre-Olympic-hock;_ylt=ApLTkPkVhR4sp0U0a5KfxRSGsbV_?urn=oly,218250

Not sure how all that is figured out, but on paper I don't see Canada losing. Their defense/goalie situation is just too strong. Luckily Olympic hockey is not played on paper.

Gawd, I want to beat the Canadians so bad.......I know it won't happen, but man it would be something.

Miller would have to steal it...could happen. I dont see USA even medaling, though Sweden has not played well internationally recently. The Czechs always play above their heads at the olympics

I know, and guys like Kane, Kessel, Malone and Parise would have to be their best to even stay in the game.

someone explain to me why montreal would give up a second round pick for dominic moore? he sucks.

being a Sabres fan, whose team gave up a 2nd round pick for him last February, I cannot.

i guess i shouldn't say he sucks - i mean, he's good enough to be on an nhl roster - but he's basically your standard 3rd/4th line player... solid defense, scores an occasional goal, decent skater. but really, these guys are a dime a dozen and can be signed on the open market for a million bucks each offseason. hell the flyers had one (blair betts) in training camp as a non-guaranteed invitee and he made the team and gets good minutes on the 4th line and PK. but there's no reason to deal a second round pick for a guy like that.

He sure sucked for us

i saw today that toronto is killing penalties at a 71.4% rate. that is incredibly bad.

one other thing that stood out to me was that washington has 3.92 goals per game, and the next-closest team is at 3.19.

some pretty big trades today

Washington loaded up. i like the Avs selling high on Wolski and buying low on Mueller. the Kings seemed to give up on Purcell way too early.

nah. he doesn't fit in our lineup at all. schenn and loktionov and moller and even parse are way better prospects than purcell. he could definitely be one of those "change of scenery" guys though. definitely didn't fit here any more though.

i'll admit i like his offensive upside (i mostly felt the same about O'Sullivan too and he's been a colossal disappointment) but the Lightning should be a really good situation for him, if he can land on VLC's wing

if o'sullivan doesn't sulk his way out of the nhl i could see him being a fantastic defensive player. he showed a lot of promise at that end of the ice when he played here, even when he wasn't scoring last season (i was seriously disappointed to see him go). he improved his game in that area 10-fold after coming to the nhl as an offense only player. of course he still has tons of offensive-potential, but he seems to have worked himself into the doghouse of two straight coaches, so we'll see how that pans out.

i definitely like purcell's offensive game, but it's not nearly tough enough. he stays outside on the perimeter and very rarely ventures to the "tough" areas. having a goal scoring center like vinny or stamkos could really help though. he is a very gifted passers, probably one of the best i've seen on the kings. he just seemed to like the confidence to play any kind of a gritty game and never ended up producing for us.

not sure if the nhl will make any sort of suspension here, but these types of hits have to be illegal. it's an obvious blow directly to the head of a defenseless player.

I found it amazing that there were Pittsburgh homers who were trying to justify that hit. Yes he should get suspended. I think it is time the NHL really starts to step it up on goon hits. This is not the case with Matt Cooke, but often a 2 game suspension for some of these guys may actually help their teams. Is Minnesota really missing Boogard? If they started giving out 5+ game suspensions it will start putting a dent into goonery, especially if they did it in the playoffs. Boogard probably doesnt want to get suspended 5 games because that will become a lot of money. Pittsburgh doesn't want to be without Cooke for 5 games, because he is a valuable player.

I could rant for hours on the subject of goons and inappropriate fighting in the NHL. I just want to point out that yesterdays Hawks/Wings game was fast paced, physical, and very entertaining game. Somehow they did all that without any goon tactics and stupid fighting. I think Pierre even mentioned at one point that it was refreshing to watch a player give a clean hit and not have to worry about some goon retaliating, or something like that.

it's really ironic, because seemingly everybody's reaction to the hit is Richards/Booth (truffle's moral equivocating is sure to follow, i know)

...Matt Cooke, whose destruction of Marc Savard was eerily similar to Mike Richards/David Booth, there will be a lot of emotion surrounding this debate.

richards' hit was more to the body of booth. savard was leaning forward and his head was exposed, and cooke almost made no contact except to the head of savard.

the other difference was that richards got thrown out of the game for interference and florida was given a 5 minute power play, while there was no punishment for the dirtier hit. but no surprise there.

anyway, the nhl people should get together after this season and outlaw blind-side shoulders to the head.

i also saw that the blue jackets had 11 shots, including only 5 in the first 2 periods, which is pretty [expletive] bad.

they're unbelievably awful. so much for building on last year's playoff appearance
