there's no [expletive] rule for a goal to be disallowed without a penalty being called.

Incorrect. According to NHL rule 69.1, incidental contact within the crease will result in a disallowed goal but not a penalty.

Edit to add:

69.1 says that incidental contact within the crease *that impairs the goaltenders' ability to move within his crease* results in a goal being disallowed

69.2 outlines when to call a penalty, and that's when the player *initiates* contact with the goaltender.

well then the call is still wrong because fleury was 2 feet outside his crease.

is there also a rule allowing the referees to watch the play on the jumbotron and then decide what to call? because that's what they did.

you should also check out the scott hartnell penalty on crosby... crosby initiated a (clean) check against hartnell, they both fell down, and hartnell got a roughing penalty. even the penguin announcers were amazed by it.

It that case, it's referee's discretion whether the player made "a reasonable effort to avoid the contact."

That would definitely be against the rule.

he definitely didn't, although i'd argue that when there's a loose puck that's two feel outside the paint, the attacking player has just as much right to play the puck as the goaltender does to try to trap it. they should also just get rid of the crease since goalies come 5 feet out of the net to cut down angles and then always get interference calls when attacking players run into them.

i would have been okay with the goalie interference call or a goal, but the call they made doesn't exist in the rule book, and that they watched the replay on the jumbotron is an even more egregious violation.

thankfully the flyers blow so i can just take the rest of the year off from hockey.

as further evidence of the ineptitude, here's a breakdown of several situations on the nhl.com website:

http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26557

2. THE GOALKEEPER IS OUT OF THE GOAL CREASE.

A. An attacking player makes incidental contact with the goalkeeper, however, no goal is scored on the play. - Play continues, no whistle.

B. An attacking player makes incidental contact with the goalkeeper at the time a goal is scored. -Goal is allowed.

C. An attacking player makes other than incidental contact with the goalkeeper, however, no goal is scored on the play. -A Minor and/or Major penalty, plus assessment of whatever other penalties may be appropriate up to and including Supplementary Discipline.

D. An attacking player makes other than incidental contact with the goalkeeper at the time a goal is scored. -A Minor and/or Major penalty, plus assessment of whatever other penalties may be appropriate up to and including Supplementary Discipline and the goal is disallowed.

note that there is no situation in which a goalie who is outside his goal crease can be hit by an opposing player, with a goal being scored during the play, and result in a disallowed goal with no penalty being assessed. dan marouelli, who's always been bad, made the call. he should be suspended for not knowing the rules and for using the jumbotron to make a ruling, but since the NHL has allowed awful refs like marouelli, mccreary, don koharski and mick mcgeough to stay in the league for decades. basically there were three goals - the disallowed flyer goal, two missed calls on the third goal and a PP goal after one of the most mind-boggling calls i've ever seen - that were a result of referees simply not doing their job correctly. plus an obvious stick through by fleury that at the very least has to be a minor penalty. it's reached the point where i have a hard time enjoying a lot of games because the officiating is so horrendous and decides way too many outcomes.

That's a poor explanation of the rule by NHL.com

Here's the rule itself:

http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26480

69.1 Interference on the Goalkeeper - This rule is based on the premise that an attacking player’s position, whether inside or outside the crease, should not, by itself, determine whether a goal should be allowed or disallowed. In other words, goals scored while attacking players are standing in the crease may, in appropriate circumstances be allowed. Goals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper’s ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal; or (2) an attacking player initiates intentional or deliberate contact with a goalkeeper, inside or outside of his goal crease. Incidental contact with a goalkeeper will be permitted, and resulting goals allowed, when such contact is initiated outside of the goal crease, provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact. The rule will be enforced exclusively in accordance with the on-ice judgment of the Referee(s), and not by means of video replay or review.

If, in the judgment of the referee(s), the player idd not make a reasonable effort to avoid incidental contact outside the crease, the goal can be disallowed without a penalty being called.

for all the painful reviews and the botched call in the Stanley Cup finals, the 2 or 3 years that all goals were waved off for having a player in the crease was at least an objective clear rule that was easily enforced. The NHL allows way to much subjective judgment from their officials

I disagree. That rule was ridiculous, goals being waved off when the goalie wasn't interefered with at all. There is subjectivity to the same degree in all sports. It can't be avoided.

If they would have stuck with it though, in a couple of more years the players would have made changes and by now it would be uncommon. I always thought that goalie equipment needed to be smaller if they were going to have this rule.

It would perhaps be uncommon but still terribly unfair when actually enforced. Players shouldn't be forced to tiptoe around the crease. There are guys there who get paid to clear them out. Let them do their jobs.

NHL playoff seeding:

East:

- Washington is the 1 seed and has clinched the President's Trophy.

- New Jersey and Pittsburgh are currently even, with NJ holding the tiebreaker (12-0 H2H point advantage)

- Buffalo has clinched the Northeast and trail NJ/Pittsburgh by 1 point for the 2 seed.

- The NJ/Pittsburgh runner up will be the 4 seed.

- Ottawa has clinched the 5 seed.

- One win each for Boston, Montreal and Philly, or one loss by the Rangers and they're all in.

West:

- San Jose and Chicago have clinched the 1-2 seeds, with Chicago holding the tiebreaker.

- Vancouver has clinched the 3 seed.

- Phoenix has clinched the 4 seed.

- Nashville, Detroit, LA and Colorado have clinched the 5-8 seeds. Nashville has clinched a better record than Colorado, but all else is undecided.

NHL playoffs update:

Eastern Conference

- Washington has clinched the President's trophy, and thus the 1 seed.

- Montreal has clinched the 8 seed, so the first round series will be Washington-Montreal

- Pittsburgh has clinched the 4 seed, and Ottawa has clinched the 5 seed, so another first round series will be Pittsburgh-Ottawa

- Whoever wins the Buffalo-New Jersey game will play the winner of the Philadelphia-NY Rangers game in the first round in the 2-7 matchup.

- The Buffalo-NJ loser will play Boston in the first round.

Western Conference

- If Chicago wins, they're the 1 seed and San Jose is the 2. Chicago loses, SJ 1, Chicago 2.

- Vancouver is the 3 seed.

- Phoenix is the 4 seed.

- Colorado is the 8 seed.

- Detroit/Nashville/LA is a mess, as there are many possibilities for any of them to get any of those seeds. The only easy thing is if Detroit wins, they're the 5 seed.

"You hope Matt Cooke is OK."

no, i really don't

He walked away so that was good. But honestly with something like that you hope any player is OK. For one reason and one reason only that being the anti-fighting crowd would have more ammo in their B.S. agenda to get fighting out of hockey.

As it is Cooke deserved what he got.
