We have a full outfield.

third base is solid

we could use a new 1B, but Derrek Lee can do no wrong in Lous eyes.

Soto should be OK.

the only place where I could see a trade happeneig when the time comes, barring major injury is middle infield.

While Im OK with Theriot and Fontenot, if a 2B or SS with a better bat were to the materialze on the trading block, I hope Hendry would make a move for it.

The problem is, I cant think of any options out there.

Ronnie Belliard is all IO can think of, and hed just be a right handed version of Fontenot for a platoon, and isnt the answer to the lack of power problem.

On offense we need someone who can back up 3B/SS/2B and we need to improve the bench. Basically we need Mark DeRosa, but since he isn't out there who else fits that description.

For pitching, we obviously need some pen help, and it would help for it to be a lefty. Actually a lefty and a righty would be nice.

Other than that we are fine. Lee will come around. He'll never be 2005 Lee or even 2007 Lee, but I think we'll end up getting .280/.350/.470 out of him, which is fine because we supposedly have plus offense at other positions. Soto will come around, he may not put up last years numbers but he'll be fine.

When Bradleys ready to play, we'll be solid

Soriano

Theriot

Ramirez

Bradley

Fukudome

Lee

Soto

Fontenot

could be the best lineup to go with. The problem is, we have no idea when Bradley will be ready.

we really need production in the heart of the lineup. the Cards are proving that if you have that going for you, the rest will fall into place.

Essentially zero chance Lee goes .280/.350/.470.

He hasn't had a single .800 OPS month in a year.

He's one of the biggest liabilities in MLB.

Cleveland has started out 6-12. If they continue to flounder, maybe we could trade for DeRosa in July. He's in the last year of his contract, so he'd likely be on the block.

I was honestly thinking that could be a possibility.

It's very early for both the Cubs, Indians, and DeRosa, but right now his line is

.195/.271/.338/.608 plus he is 34 years old. I'm a DeRosa fan, but he isn't the answer right now.

It definitely early, but this makes me give Hendry the benefit of the doubt.

are there any expensive-but-talented bullpen arms we can acquire on non-contending teams? i can see hendry going for that.

jamie walker? i guess that depends on whether you consider him talented.

You could say this about every player in the cubs lineup save for Ramirez and Soriano.

Kosuke?

Gregg and Miles for Wood and DeRosa. I would do it in a heart beat.

Sherrill from the Orioles. If the Reds fall out and we are willing to take on the salary we could probably get Cordero. IDK know if they have anyone on their teams, but I am sure guys will be available form the Mariners, A's, Nats, Pirates, Bluejays (if they fall out), and probably whatever teams(s) from the NL West/AL central that fall out of contention but right now both divisions are pretty open and all the teams could be somewhat competing until mid-June-mid July

I wonder if the Marlins would consider moving Dan Uggla or Jorge Cantu. These guys always seem willing to move a player if the price is right.

The real question is how much the Marlins would want because we can't afford to give up 2-3 good prospects for either of them.

Cantu might be worth it. He can play all around the infield, and I believe hes put in a little bit of time in the outfield, not that wed need that. I wouldnt give up anything huge for him, but it couldnt hurt to see waht the asking price is. I suppose the next best option would be not trading DeRosa, but we cant exactly do that.

uh, why?

Freel at 3rd and Fontenot at 2nd has to be better than Fontenot at 3rd and Miles starting on a regular basis. Doesn't it? Freel has enough speed to replace the roster spot wasted on Gathright.

No, it really isn't. Freel probably isn't an upgrade over Miles with the bat at this point and he's lost a few steps over the last couple years so he likely isn't any better than Fontenot defensively at 3rd. Trading for Freel could actually make the situation worse instead of better.

Now, if we could get the Freel of 3 to 4 years ago, he would be worth it. But the current one that has had a severe knee issue and a torn hamstring the last couple years has lost the main thing that made him decently valuable in the first place.

Nobody is trading a major cog in their team this early in the season... that probably even goes as far as guys like Wes Helms on the Marlins, let alone Uggla or Cantu. If you want to get somebody, it has to be somebody management has been trying to unload for years... a la Bobby Crosby. Or you could try to nab a player from AAA somewhere... I still think Hendry's failure to sign McPherson is one of the more egregious errors of the offseason.

McPherson would have been a nice pickup, but I thought the Cubs should have signed Aurilia when he was available.

Better still, Hendry should never have traded DeRosa in the first place. Problem solved before it even becomes a problem.

What's done is done, but this may be the most inexplicable move Hendry has made in his tenure.
