Madden issued the following statement today:

"It’s time. I’m 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I’m home and, more importantly, when I’m not…

It’s been such a great ride… the NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion – it still is. I appreciate all of the people who are and were such an important part of the most enjoyable, most fun anyone could have… that great life with the teams, the players, the coaches, the owners, the League… my broadcasting partners Pat and Al… the production people and the fans …is still great… it’s still fun and that’s what it makes it hard and that’s why it took me a few months to make a decision.

I still love every part of it – the travel, the practices, the game film, the games, seeing old friends and meeting new people… but I know this is the right time."

by the way... who knew anabiano.... was John Madden.

I agree that it's time. He will be missed.

I'm surprised to see all the love for Madden. If I ever hear anyone use the phrase "blithering idiot", I immediately think of Madden. There are very few broadcasters in any sport who are worse than Madden. 20 years too late imo.

I've never understood the hate for Madden. I've always liked him.

He slipped toward the end, but he was always the best football analyst.

I can buy that, but I think most of the criticism is over the top.

Collinsworth to replace him on SNF.

Good choice.

I agree, Collinsworth is good.

I'll miss Madden, though. I enjoyed him in the booth.

Ugh, I don't like Collinsworth.

all the multi-legged turkeys and circling people in the crowd was what annoyed people

And I had no problem with any of that.

I like Collinsworth as his replacement. He's one of the best in the business, IMO.

He only calls half the game. I agree his voice is confident and he gives you good information about the offense. Seldom a comment about anything on D though. I'd like him better paired with someone for balance. Not on his own with a play-by-play though.

To Collinsworth, the game is all about white, shiny offenses who, if they do everything right, cannot fail against defenses that barely deserve to grace the same field.
