And another 3 or 4 may owe some of their standing to Epstein/Hoyer player development despite not being drafted or signed by them.

I'm not sure if Javy would be a top 5 prospect right now in the old system. He would definitely be top 100 though.

Although I guess that example is more "actual player development" vs. "dumpster fire"

And there'd probably be another 3 or 4 more if they were able to continue developing those guys they drafted elsewhere

Great for them. Neither of them has run a playoff team since 2009. Priorities, I guess.

Your dismissal of minor league playoffs is offensive.

AND they've yet to win NFC North in their entire careers!

Winning football divisions and winning MLB divisions seem equally low on their priority list, sure. At least when compared with the coveted prospect rankings.

Okay, maybe a more direct answer will better make the point. This is a thread called "Cub prospects in the news" in the Minor League forum. Trying to relay a Twitter tidbit into some referendum on how much the Front Office is "trying" at the MLB level is irrelevant, not to mention obnoxious considering that multiple other forums on this site are littered with that discussion. Stop.

Sorry, but this just goes back to the point that if you spend a few years with the only mandate being to acquire prospects, it is not an accomplishment when you actually acquire prospects. The better run organizations don't run on a single, prospects only, mandate where results in the major league do not matter.

This thread may be about prospects in the news and be located in the minor league forum but it still falls under a Chicago Cubs website.

No, it does not. That discussion is plastered all over the rest of the forums on this site, there's no need for obnoxious snark to direct another thread to that topic.

Criticize the snark? Fine. But there's not really a problem with evaluating how Epstein and Hoyer ended up with so many great prospects: they had a lot of favorable picks which were obtained at the expense of their MLB team.

It's an important qualifier to "zomg our FO has so many good young players" and mentioning those tradeoffs is relevant to that comment and this thread.

I don't think he would "definitely" be in the Top 100. Given how abysmal the organization was with hitting prospects, Javy would have probably just finished the year in Hi-A hitting .240 with 20 homers as a third baseman. And 200 k's.

Honestly, they probably would have accidentally set him on fire by now. Because that's just how completely awful the old organization was, which is important to believe.

It was so awful that I'm not sure whether this is more sarcasm or humorous hyperbole.

Puff piece, with some actual info. Looks like Kevin Encarnacion and Jose Zapata were among FIVE Cubs in that car crash a little while back, and are doing well, but STILL in the hospital.

Translates roughly to:

I was visiting my bro Kevin Encarnacion. He had an accident and burned 4% of his body. They have to operate. God willing he'll get past this soon.

you're obviously trying to be an obnoxious puke as per usual, but within your sarcasm is mostly an actual truism

collectively, over the last 15 years*, the Cubs' best home-grown hitter has been Geo Soto, with a total 11.2 career WAR; for comparison's sake, Nyjer Morgan/Tony Graffanino/Frank Catalanatto have higher career WARs

Ryan Theriot is 3rd(!) on that list, and Carlos Zambrano's hitting would place 5th; it's probably impossible to overstate how comprehensively inept our player development has been on the offensive side for the better part of this century, if you're making any type of honest attempt to be objective

*picked at random- a nice, even round number

It obviously is possible to overstate it, because we've got people seriously wondering if maybe the current front office got a top-5 prospect out of a kid who may not have been top-100 without their brilliant guidance.

(He was also No. 61 in the Jan. 2012 lists)

i honestly wonder if guys like harvey or colvin would've turned out differently in this system. especially colvin, who was almost good enough to be a passable major leaguer despite it.

did anyone catch mcleod on mac and spiegs (which was really rozner and spiegel) yesterday?

i heard them say he'd be on during the hour while i was in the car. might've gotten pushed aside when the ventura news came out, though.
