Seriously I'd love to hear the list of free agents the last two years that would have radically improved this team.

We're talking about it being inexcusable to not compete for a playoff spot until 2015, not what their record was last year.

Did I read the McLeod quote wrong? He basically said tough [expletive], we won't be in the playoffs in 2015 either, not when we have to compete with the Pirates AND the Reds

He didn't say 'no' to the question. He was just being respectful to the other teams in the division.

He didn't say 'yes' to the question either. And why no respect for a Brewers team we're tied with right now?

I thought it was kind of dickish for law to be like "your team is garbage for the next two seasons" while talking to mcleod though I guess mcleod didn't really argue with him about it...

Oh come on. What does Ryan Howard have to do with anybody anyone has suggested going after this offseason?

Nothing. But a chronic hamstring injury to Ellsbury could make a 6/100 type contract look really bad, really quick.

With a bad contract on the books, it'd be just like having to deal with an artificially low payroll. That'd suck...

This is getting silly.

I'd be happy enough to get him, even at that price, I guess. But if we're going to be hampered financially again, I see us adding Hughes, a decent bullpen arm, and a Granderson type, and see what happens.

good lord every contract COULD suck.

OMG WHY CAN'T THERE BE PERFECTLY HEALTHY 24 YEAR OLD STUD FREE AGENTS WILLING TO SIGN LOW RISK SHORT TERM TEAM FRIENDLY CONTRACTS.

it's just an example of a bad contract. take a player like choo, for example - if you had him a 6 year contract and his bat starts to go south, you're left with a player producing 1 or 2 wins a year and getting paid probably upwards of $15m per year to do it.

anyway, mcleod's comments were intended to be complimentary toward the division rivals, not "whelp the next 2+ seasons are a write-off" unless you're Negatron Kyle.

Whats wrong with that statement? Hell, I'm not opposed to signing him even. Just figure we won't go that route if we're still fucked financially. Signing BJ Upton seemed like a good idea last year, didn't it? How about now? [expletive] goes wrong sometimes. If we're strapped, we've got to make sure when we make a big move, its the right one. Its not OK to question giving an oft-injured, speed guy coming up on 30, a longterm deal?

Definitely waiting for them to make that transition from team building up from within to team going outside the organization to accompany likely pieces from within. Last year would've been premature to spend more than they had to (beyond Jackson). So with expiring contracts, trades, etc. I'm hoping they can get a player in their prime at market value.

I would love Ellsbury and cross that bridge happily if there are too few starter roles for far too productive players to not start.

Ellsbury isn't getting 6/$100 million. You go after a guy with his history because it's going to allow you to get him for a more a manageable contract. Teams aren't tossing out stupid huge contracts for guys like him.

Why wouldn't they? Teams are flush with cash right now. And the FA classes are getting weaker and weaker. I think he'll get that type of contract. Maybe even more if teams with protected picks are buying.

But you still go after him in hopes of teams being scared of him considerable time over the last 4 seasons, I don't see him getting that type of deal. At most, a team might sneak into the Michael Bourn type of contract of 4/48.

Jacoby Ellsbury will easily get 100 million. Ferrin and Parks were talking it about it today on their podcast.

I think people are going to be surprised when they see the offseason contracts this year. There's very little to spend money on, but a lot of teams have a lot of money. Most of them aren't going to just not spend it. Total money available is going to be divided among the available free agent class, even if it's bad.

We're agreeing too much.

But that's not agreeing with you.

I meant it to be agreeing with him.

We're back in the era of inflation. The 2000s saw basically stagnant contracts, so we've forgotten what it was like in the 1990s when every year you'd think you'd have a handle on contracts and then the next year everybody would get like 30% more than similar players the previous year.

Am I reading that wrong? He's saying guys will get big contracts, isn't he? After Cano, Ellsbury is likely going to get the biggest of anyone else.
