Yeah thats pretty weird they'd release him so close to such a milestone but then again unlike lets say Thome, Sheffield isn't as well liked in Detroit as Thome is in Chicago. My guess is he ends up as a DH somewhere.

If he cares about the milestone and winning and not about money, then I can see a 1 year deal with Tampa Bay.

But its Gary Sheffield here, why would he ever take less than what he thinks he's worth?

Detroit owes Sheffield 14m no matter where he plays. Now he's free to pick where he wants to play, provided that team wants him.

Quicker bat, Sheffield or Bonds?

in their prime or today?

I think Bonds was quicker. Sheffield's entire approach at the plate was more violent and involved more movement, but I think Bonds always had the quicker bat.

Can't disagree. Bonds had the quicker bat, but I've never seen anybody with quicker wrists then Gary Sheffield.

Apparently Dusty is jonesing for some Sheffield.

Reds manager Dusty Baker said he plans to meet with Gary Sheffield on Thursday.

"We are going to talk," Reds GM Walt Jocketty confirmed. "Dusty talked with him [on Tuesday] night. The two have a history. We have to wait for him to clear waivers [Thursday], but we'll talk after that. We have interest because he is a legitimate big bat to add to our lineup." It'd be more than a little ironic if the Reds signed Sheffield to play left field after bragging about how much more athletic they are now with Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr. gone. It wouldn't necessarily be a bad gamble to sign him, but it'd almost certainly lead to the Chris Dickerson/Jonny Gomes platoon being replaced when sending Willy Taveras to the bench would be the much better idea.

God I love Dusty.

sheffield could hit 40 HR this year if he got the fulltime job.

or he could hit 15 with a .300 obp and unacceptably bad defense.

in fairness, though, this is probably the sort of thing cincinnati should be doing. sheffield might not be the right guy, but they're in the sort of spot where having a few guys to roll the dice on in the hopes that they hit on something and pick up 5 wins could be pretty huge.

he's done it twice in his entire career, and that was when he actually stayed healthy and productive. now he's 40 years old and his numbers have been in serious decline. the chance of him hitting 40 homers is probably less than 1%.

It's funny, I was listening to ESPN a few days ago and they were talking about how from the looks of things Sheff's bat speed had returned and they expected him to really pick it up soon. Then they released him.

And if by some chance Sheffield does hit closer to his 07 numbers this year and Cincy is still out of the race by the trade deadline, he'd bring in some decent chips from a contender, I would think.

I'm not sure what the upside of Chris Dickerson is, though, so it may not be a good idea to block his development.

if done right, sure. the roto blurb got it right fearing this will push Dickerson/Gomes to the bench instead of Taveras. that's where the Dusty effect is felt.

also, you can't count on Dusty to use Sheffield effectively. if he does struggle and seems to have lost it, you know Dusty will keep running him out there.

basically, if the Reds had a decent manager I'd think this was a decent risk. but i have to believe Dusty is going to screw it up.
