According to MLBTR:

The sale of the Padres to a group led by Jeff Moorad may take several years to complete, but Moorad is now running the team according to Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Moorad's group owns 35% of the team currently.

Moorad plans to invest in the draft, but he wouldn't commit to anything regarding the team's payroll. Tom Krasovic of the Union-Tribune sums up the contracts Moorad will inherit in the front office:

GM Kevin Towers, whose salary is well within the Top 10 among GMs, is under contract through 2010. Executive vice president Paul DePodesta, who had reported to Sandy Alderson, is guaranteed an average well above $500,000 per year through 2011. Director of player development and scouting Grady Fuson, who was hired by Towers in early 2005, is under contract through 2010. As for manager Bud Black, he is in the final year of his contract.

What about Jake Peavy? Moorad told Center:

"It would be premature for me to say what is going to happen. The goal is to build this for the long term. I don't know how that impacts the Peavy situation. But we're going to do whatever we can to improve the team."

Mike Ferrin of XM Radio snagged more Moorad comments on Peavy:

"Peavy has been a terrific performer for the club at the same time I don't think any player is untouchable. I think at some point I am sure Kevin Towers and I will visit about the issue and Kevin will have a point of view and frankly I'll defer to it. I certainly want to be kept informed but I think Kevin will have a perspective on the Peavy situation and I really looking forward hearing it."[/i]

So it looks like even though Moorad is in place, he makes it sound like he's not closing the book on trading Peavy even if he's the owner. Makes it sound more like Peavy will be traded.

I think it's more of a Cubs issue than a San Diego issue on whether this trade happens. The Cubs are the ones who turned down a deal, and went into pause mode while under ownership changes.

I dont dude, i dont know if buy into the notion that the Cubs turned down the offer because there was a report on yahoo sports that it was actually the padres who backed off. I dont think we'll know whats going down until the cubs sale is finalized since the padres sale is pretty much set. I still think the cubs trade DeRo because of peavy, i dont buy the notion that trade marquis and dero for just bradley. I think it was more they planned on making a peavy trade but then ran into a snag because of the ownership situations.

We're not allowed to discuss Jake Peavy here anymore. Hosak and Dextermorgan are to blame. Bitch at them, I guess.

Did we lose Thor's hammer of death or something? Sounds like a simple problem with a simple solution...

Can't mods just override user posts and delete them from the thread? That'd be gnarly if this gets out of hand again. I'm tired of having multiple threads, and I miss the mammoth one we had a couple months ago.

On the topic of Peavy, if our team this year ends up being in a position where we don't really need Jake Peavy to win, do we still do the trade? I'd think at this point he'd be a luxury to have, not a necessity. Then again I can see them trading for Peavy and letting Harden walk at the end of the season and (hopefully) getting some draft picks in return for him.

That being said, I still hope we get him. I'll miss Vitters if it happens though. Here's hoping Hendry can pull of a miracle trade and get Peavy without giving up Vitters (not gonna happen though)

Or users can avoid senseless attacks. I guess either strategy could work though.

Well you know when it is the same people over and over getting the thread locked it seems like it would make more sense to deal with those individuals than keep locking threads.

From Cubs.com board........."Watching the game on mlb ticket and the Rockies announcer just said that the Cubs Peavy talks are heating up again ... Anyone have any new news on this . Peavy maybe a Cub by opening day :) "

Anyone else watching this game that can confirm this? I trust people here a WHOLE LOT MORE than on Cubs.com.

Yes, I am watching a replay of the broadcast and the announcers did bring it up. No info really, just speculating that comments from the Padres side indicates it could be on again.

Peavy has about the same chance of being a Cub by opening day as I do. If anything happens, it will be around July at the earliest.

Padres May Add A Reliever

By Tim Dierkes [March 31 at 11:03pm CST]

According to MLB.com's Corey Brock, the Padres continue to eye the trade market for a hard-throwing reliever with late-inning potential. Like recent acquisition Eulogio De La Cruz, the focus is on pitchers who are out of options.

Brock says the Padres might have interest in Cleveland's Ed Mujica. Mujica, 25 in May, hasn't had big league success in recent years but did average 92.5 mph on his fastball in '08.

My own speculation - another name to watch might be Fernando Nieve, who the Mets recently claimed from the Astros but then placed back on waivers. Here's the partial list of other out of options players I cobbled together earlier this year.

Marshall, Heilman, Gaudin or Guzman, and Jake Fox for Peavy.

that leaves our pitching staff with

Z

Peavy

Lilly

Demp

Harden

Marmol

Gregg

Patton

Chad Fox

Cotts

Gaudin or Gooz

Vizcaino

Of course then we dont have an insurance plan for Harden unless on of our AAAers impresses enough, but Im sure we can find someone if/when the time comes.

I think the chances of Peavy agreeing to a trade to the Pirates are slim and none.

I don't know...the Pirates are such a good team. Are you sure?

Funny how that looks totally out of context!
