Maybe Peavy will intentionally lose games to make the Padres a) want to cut his salary faster, and b) lower their demands b/c he'll be deemed not as good

Assuming you're kidding, but still ... who would want a guy that throws the team under the bus for his own personal interests?

Who is to say it would be noticeable? Playing for the San Diego Padres this season is going to be pretty damn depressing. Obviously, depression can sometimes lead to lowered performance. A half point added to his ERA won't raise sane carpet-bagging accusations. But it might lower his value a notch to get a trade done.

I don't think he was talking about how noticeable it would be or how people would react, but moreso the fact that maybe you wouldn't want someone who would be willing to intentionally not do his best and hurt his team for his own interests on your team.

That's how I read it, at least.

I was completely kidding. I don't think Peavy is throwing any games to force a trade. That said, Bradley pretty much came out and said he didn't play with nagging injuries at times. And I completely support having Bradley on the team. If a guy feels his team is jerking him around, so he doesn't give it his all every time out (whether completely intentional or not), it's kind of hard to blame him.

I would be surprised if everyone on nsbb right now could say they gave 100% to their employer all of the time and that when they felt they were getting shafted by their boss in some way, that it didn't hurt their performance (or desire to do their best).

But if Peavy tanks a game and that leads to him being traded to the Cubs more quickly and for less, I'll welcome him with open arms.

Peavy's first start was a day game at Petco. Day games make that park very hitter friendly.

I hate that we are still talking about this, but if we are going to pull of a trade without getting a 3rd team involved it will probably have to be Marhsall, Stevens, probably 2 of Archer/Gaud/Ascanio/Atkins/Wells and we would probably have to do a PTBNL out of a group of guys like Cashner, Flaherty, Jackson, or Carpenter. That is still a fairly weak package and unless the Padres are in a dire financial situation and just can't afford his contract that isn't that great of a return.

Marshall, Stevens, and Vitters sounds fair, and maybe one of the Ascanio/Atkins/Wells like.

I knew I was forgetting someone when I was typing, but yeah Vitters is obviously the main guy.

if we had wieters, would that be enough? i dont know why i keep wondering this.

If we had Wieters, hopefully we would have traded D. Lee for another pitcher.

Can Wieters play 1B?

Who cares, he's not on our team. If we had Wieters, they would trade us Jesus for him

If we had drafted Wieters, the Cubs would have gotten CC last year.

- Still would have been swept in the playoffs

- He still would have signed with NYY

Not trying to jinx it but Guzman is driving his stock up. He really has looked filthy his first couple of outings, that slider/breakingball is a nasty pitch. I honestly do feel they kept guzman because they figure the padres liked the kid and would want him in a package.

I heard yesterday that the Padres are down more than 10,000 season ticket packages from the previous year.

the padres are really trying to be hush hush about trading peavy. Put to me its as close as 100% that he'll be trading some time this season. Projected ticket sales for the padres have been down for a while now. They know they have to trade peavy and yes, they have to but they're going to continue to say they might not or they dont know yet because if they come up front and say they are, they lose leverage. It would be a different story if peavy didnt have a no trade clause but since he does, they really have to play it smart and not show their cards since they know they can't have a bidding war for peavy's services since only a few or handful of teams can actually offer packages, some of which might not want to add peavy's contract or might not want to add peavy period because they already have enough pitching.

If we had Wieters we would be trading or moving Soto to 1st Base.

Stark talked to an executive of a team that has Jake Peavy on its radar. This exec noted that teams did not overpay in deals for Rich Harden and Johan Santana, so the Padres may not be able to demand a ridiculous bounty for Peavy.

According to ChicagoCubsonline.com:

The Jake Peavy rumors that dominated the winter appear to be making the rounds again. Lee Hamilton reported on his XM Radio show last weekend he heard the Jake Peavy to the Cubs talk was heating back up. Since last weekend not one, not two but three separate reports from the mainstream media mentioned Jake Peavy and the Cubs in the same sentence.

When the Cubs are official sold and the Ricketts family is put in place, i expect rumors to start flying

I guess we can start talking about potential trade bait

Column A

Josh Vitters-probably the key

Column B

Sean Marshall

Aaron Heilman

Angel Guzman

Column C

Tyler Colvin

Jeremy Papelbon

Ryan Flaherty

Andrew Cashner

Wellington Castillo

Jeff Stevens

Keven Hart

the other 2 guys from the DeRosa trade

Column D

Jake Fox-potential throw in

Sam Fuld-potential throw in

Mitch Atkins-potential throw in

Id say Vitters+1 of Column B+2 from column C(or 2 from B+1 from C)+1 from column D.
