No thanks. Pudge hasn't very good at all since 2004. One game doesn't change that. I can't imagine his asking price is worth the upgrade over Bako/Hill when he'll be a backup. I also have an irrational fear that Lou would play him over Soto more than he should.

Ivan Rodriguez had one hellova game today. (4 for 4 with a walk). I think I'm most surprised by the walk

Any interest?

Sure, if he'd be satisfied with 100-120 AB's.

And not very much money.

Like $1M.

The way theyve been penny pinching this off season aside from Bradley, Id be shocked if they dished out any more money for a luxury, especially when they already have Babe Bako and Ty Hill behind him.

If they were to mak any pickups before the sale is completed, it would be for a lefty reliever of a bargain starter like Pedro or Shilling.

Hendry should have signed him prior to the 2003 season. If he had we very well might have won the pennant. I had heard he wanted to sign with the Cubs. Stupid Jimbo.

Ha! I agree. While the season could have ended up playing out completely differently, I remember vehemently wanting the Cubs to sign Pudge before that year.

Hendry should have brought back Lofton for 2004 as well, even with Patterson coming off the injury. IIRC, Lofton settled for a backup role somewhere else anyway.

Then again, I wanted to sign Jason Schmidt a few years ago, didn't mind the Juan Pierre acquisition, and wanted Girardi instead of Piniella (the jury is still out on that one), so who knows?

He also should have signed Carlos Beltran. That would have been nice.

Thing is, we could have afforded Beltran then traded Sosa to the Mets. Instead, we waited 2 years and spent even more money on a worse player (Soriano). Who knows, though, maybe the ownership wouldn't have OKd all of the money on Beltran after 2004.

Without derailing this thread too much more, I remember that off-season being consumed with trading Sosa before addressing any other moves. The Mets kicked the tires of Sosa but nothing ever came of it. Hence the wasted offseason and getting nothing but Mike Fontenot to show for it.

Oh well. It's fun to play what if...

Why is the jury out on Lou/Girrardi? What has Joe done? If you want to say he kept Florida in the race for one year, then you have to say he ended a 13 Year playoff streak in New York too.

Lou has done what he was brought here to do. Get to the playoffs and be a unquestionable leader (for better or worse) in that clubhouse. Now, it's the players turn to step it up in the playoffs and quit playing like the weight of the world is on them.

How do we know that Lou isn't part of the choker mentality when the playoffs start? I'm not saying he is, but we don't know that he's not. A lot of the time sports coaches/manager tend to tense up and give off that vibe. We just heard Shaq call out Van Gundy for it. Choking isn't only reserved for players.

Again, I'm not saying this is the case with Lou, but his teams have now fallen well short of expectations in 3 straight postseasons. It's at least possible that he has something to do with it.

Oh BTW, saying Girardi ended the 13 year streak isn't fair. They were still a really good team last year, they just played in a ridiculous division.

According to puge (via rotoworld) he'll be signed soon.

According to CBSSports.com, Ivan Rodriguez could sign with a club shortly.

With what club exactly? "You'll see soon," Pudge predicted Friday. The 37-year-old catcher went 6-for-11 with two home runs for Team Puerto Rico in the first round of the WBC. He's hoping to parlay that success into a major league contract. The Marlins, Giants and Twins are thought to have some level of interest.

If Pudge could effectively back up 1st, 3rd, and C, he would be an excellent choice. I'm unaware of how well he would do at at 1st and 3rd.

I'm sure he could do at least a passable job at first. Hell, we put blanco there a couple times last year and it wasn't too big of a disaster. Third on the other hand, I have no idea.

I wouldn't be worried about first either. Third is where I'd have the most concerns. If Ramirez went down for a few weeks, I'd hope Pudge could handle it.
