It is, btw, possible to scout a pitcher on the pitches he throws, his command, etc, too.

I don't care who he was facing...he was throwing well. decent velocity, great movement and hit his spots with precision. The important thing is how he recovers and for him to continue to pitch like that.

I agree - Pedro looked good on the mound.

Yeah, but don't evaluators often use the phrase that the hitters will let you know how he's throwing? The opposition matters when evaluating how the guy looked. That said, I'd be fine adding Pedro to this staff. The Cubs can live with having a guy who can only give them 100 innings.

in that game, did pedro face anyone who had ever been above A ball? i don't think he did. pretty meaningless performance in the grand scheme of things.

The most notable hitters he faced were Randall Simon and Eugene Kingsale. So yes, he faced hitters who hit above A ball (both have been major leaguers for multiple years), but the lineup was very, very far from formidable.

That said, if we could get Pedro cheap, I wouldn't mind it. I like the idea of taking a chance on old vets (or young former prospects) and seeing if they can recapture what they once had. It'd have to be really cheap though.

there's a difference getting excited about the results of the game and getting excited about the way he was pitching. i think people are excited about how he was throwing, not how he was getting outs.

According to Ken Rosenthal, Pedro is seeking a deal that pays him around 5.5 million and then would include 5 million more in possible incentives.

That puts a dollar figure on what it might take to sign him.

Link.

I think he's a little risky at that dollar amount, but if he looks good throughout the WBC, it could be a gamble worth taking.

Rosenthal might want to mention that Pedro needs to be "lights out" (as he put it) for more than one inning and against better hitters than the Spanish Isle of The Netherlads, to get such a contract. That outing was as meaningful as a good side session.

What does it mean it doesn't matter who he was facing? I think you've overextending yourself trying to defend your initial point. "Great movement?" How many pitches had great movement on them?

It doesn't matter who he was facing because once the pitcher releases the ball, it doesn't matter who is at the plate - the pitch is the pitch. I don't think Pedro's going to suddenly start getting rattled by facing big league hitters. What matters with him is what kind of pitches he can execute - and he was executing great pitches.

As for your final question - I don't have the game recorded, so I wouldn't want to trust my memory of 30-40 pitches several days ago to count individual pitches and explain what kind of movement each and every one of them had.

Actually, the worst part of the DR being eliminated for me is that we don't get to scout Pedro any more.

But the good thing is Marmol won't be out there possibly getting hurt.

Which is more than enough to make me happy about it overall.

Astros making some late offseason noise , there close to a one year agreement with Pedro according to ESPN.

First Pudge, now Pedro. Whose next on their list? Edmonds? Schilling? Sosa?
