If the Cubs can get Schilling to sign a John Smoltz type deal, and is under direct order not to consider trying to get back to the pitcher moound at Wrigley till August at the earliest, I will be all for it.

If it was reasonable to expect Schilling to contribute, I'd have to imagine he would have been signed by now.

except that he already said he hasn't made a decision on whether or not he wants to come back yet. also he said he'd only go to a team like the cubs or rays.

Tough call. Both are, to me, former "great" pitchers. You're really just betting on who has a little more gas left in the tank.

Depending on how cheap they get, why not both? I think having a future HOF in Iowa's rotation just my underscore how bleeped up this offseason has been.

The guy just wants to cement his legacy. Win a WS with the Diamondbacks, the franchise's first. Win the important one with Boston, breaking the 'curse'. Then go to the Cubs and win one, breaking that curse as well?

Dude is looking for his HOF pass, because his regular season numbers won't get him there.

I'll take a Cubs WS title via almost any means, but "Curt Schilling showing up and leading the team to a title" is near the absolute bottom of my preferred methods, right after "The Cubs win the World Series and I miss it because I'm in a coma."

I'm a little offended Curt hasn't popped in here to talk to us. Is SoSH really such a better site?

I don't really have a "preferred" method.

Satan could be signed by the Cubs and lead us to a World Series title and I'd cry tears of joy.

Why the animosity towards Schilling?

He seems to have an opinion about everything. And he has no problem sharing that opinion with anyone that will listen. And even people who won't listen. If he would just keep quiet and pitch, I think he'd be a lot more popular.

Exactly what I thought someone would respond with.

But what does it all even mean, anyway? Who isn't opinionated? His wealth of opinions, if anything, signals a broad knowledge -- something not terribly common in the pro sports world. The fact that he shares it "with anyone who will listen" is a bad thing? They will listen, so, what's the problem? He's either blogging (which millions of people do, so why not him), or he's being hounded for his opinions by the media (and why not answer them?). What does he do wrong?

He's outspoken, sure, but I don't understand how it leads to "animosity."

The term "Blowhard" could have been invented for Schilling. That said, I'd be happy to see him in a Cubs uniform if I wasn't pretty sure he's a dessicated old fossil who hasn't been really good since 2004 and probably shouldn't even consider coming back.

Honestly don't know how I feel about this... I don't think Schilling is going to be very effective anymore. I would love to be proven wrong, though.

That's it. What's the point of having a Shilling if he's just going to put up a 5 ERA? His aura doesn't get to pitch.

If we were giving him a big contract I would agree with this, but bringing him in on a fairly cheap, one-year deal couldn't hurt. If he sucks in the minors during rehab, cut him - don't give him a chance to post a 5 ERA in the majors at that point.

But if he can come back healthy and pitch well, it could turn out to be a good deal. I just don't see a lot of risk here.

why would he put up a 5 era? he's done that once since he became a starter in 1990. which was in 2005, when he two thirds of the games he pitched in came out of the pen. that was the only year since 94 his era has been over FOUR. really, there's zero reason to assume that he won't be effective. it's just a question of is he healthy?

I can think of at least two reasons why he won't be effective:

1. He's really old.

2. He hasn't pitched in quite a while.
