According to ESPN's Buster Olney:

It's expected that Nomar Garciaparra will make his decision by mid-week on whether he wants to play in Oakland, or in Philadelphia, or if he'd prefer to walk away from the game.

Garciaparra, 35, hit .264/.326/.466 in 181 plate appearances for the Dodgers last year while playing first base, shortstop, and third base and earning $8.5MM. Ken Rosenthal wrote about Nomar yesterday, saying the Phillies are pessimistic about signing him because the A's are offering an opportunity for more at-bats.

Bruce mentioned the Cubs had interest earlier in the offseason. The Cubs could offer just as many at-bats as the Phillies and a better shot at the post season than Oakland. Lou would be able to find at-bats for Nomar between SS,2B,3B,1B,DH,PH ect. I really hope Hendry will take another look at Nomar.

when/where did bruce mention the cubs having interest? i haven't seen that anywhere.

i think i've written my feelings about nomar on here before. i would love to have him back. i don't think there's a more ideal option out there right now. that said, i feel that he wants to stay west where his family is. so i see him signing with oakland.

He needs ro pick Oakland. If he has any shot to continue playing, it's as a DH with the occasional spot start in the infield. With the Phils, he'll be on borrowed time, especially since Utleys supposed going to be back ahead of schedule.

I did not mention that, quite the opposite.

any specific reason given for the lack of interest?

Maybe he meant Bruce Levine. :D

Most likely.

It was Bruce Levine who mentioned the Cubs had interest in Nomar earlier in the offseason. I recall Bruce saying the Cubs talk to Nomar agent, and he told the Cubs at the time that he was looking for a everyday job. Who knows if the Cubs have spoken to Nomar since though. One thing that people aren't talking about is Nomar is considering retirement. It's no lock he signs with anyone this week, he's just deciding if he wants to come back as a bench player with some team or retire.

I hadn't heard that. The emphasis this offseason has been 100% on getting more left handed so I figured that's what they'd be doing with this spot.

Not that this is wrong, but the Cubs can't offer more money than either of the two teams and Oakland is neck and neck with Anaheim for the AL West. The Cubs are a better bet of course, but all three teams have a good shot at playing late into October.

Sorry I meant Bruce Levine. I can't understand why Hendry hasn't matched thePhillies offer in case Oakland isn't in the bidding and Nomar decides not to hang it up just yet without a ring.

Around here when you just say "Bruce" people assume you mean Miles. It may have something to do with who does and doesn't post here. :D

They need a RH backup corner infielder ... Nomar would be perfect.

Oh I agree completely. I'd love Nomar as he'd give them some power off the bench - something they desperately need.
