No worse than a 114 OPS+ in a season since 1997. 126 OPS+ in 05 and 06 and a 120 OPS+ last year. Impressive offensive numbers. But he apparently can't play defense. He also hasn't played less than 156 games since 1999.

 

It depends largely on depth (Bradley's better but will get hurt) and exactly how bad Abreu's defense is. I've heard ranges from bad enough to negate his offensive contribution to bad but not excessively so.

He's on the downside of his career, and at best he's giving away 1/3rd of his offensive value on defense, some say more. I don't want him taking up a valuable corner outfield spot.

Wow, I didn't hear that Abreau was signed to play backup infield. That is a steal even at $5 mil base with incentives that will likely pay him near $10 mil. Yeah, I'd much rather have Abreau backing up Font and Theriot even if it is for a few mil more.

I'd probably rather have Bradley 3/30 because if we do indeed pay him that much it means he's been healthy and productive.

It's not really a gamble at this point. Bradley gets hurt every year. And they're both probably below average defensively. At this point, the only gamble is whether Bradley will be as bad as Abreu defensively or a little better for the 100-110 games he's out there.

If the question is whether I would rather have Aaron Miles, Milton Bradley and Aaron Heilman as my 5th starter or Bobby Abreu and Jake Peavy, I think I'd take Abreu and Peavy.
