The Chicago Sun Times reports that Rich Harden has a small tear in his shoulder joint, calling it "just severe enough that some players might seek surgery but slight enough to be in a range often treated effectively with a strengthening program."

The report comes after pitching coach Larry Rothschild raised concerns about Harden's status by saying Saturday during a fan gathering that "he's not close to throwing off a mound yet" and "there's some issues there, no question.'' Harden did his best to quiet any concerns, saying: 'I'm on a set program, and I'm not behind at all. 'I'm right on schedule and feeling great. I'll be ready for the start of the season for sure. There's no doubt in my mind. Nobody has any doubts whether I'll be ready or not. I will.'' Jan. 18 - 11:06 am et

At least they found out about it before they let him pitch, so they can treat it before it gets worse.

Still SUCKS though. Harden is my favorite baseball player.

You can't be serious. He didn't get the tear after he stopped pitching while jerking his chicken.

I love this. HOW MANY TIMES have Cub fans heard this before? It isn't even worth saying at this point.

It was obvious last year that his shoulder was injured and he pitched thru pain, his body language was that of an injured pitcher.

and his drop in velocity. as a rule of thumb, loss of velocity = shoulder injury, loss of control but not velocity = elbow injury.

I mean before they let him pitch next season. Of course he got the injury last year.

They knew he had it last season.

I know he got a cortisone shot late in the last season, but they knew he had the tear and still exercised his option? That's odd

Any idea what the timetable is for recovery from surgery of a "minor" tear in the shoulder? Prior still hasn't recovered, but he had a torn Labrum so I think Prior's was quite a bit more severe. If the timetable for Harden would have been 4-5-6 months he should have just of had surgery after the season and come back in May/June. After hearing this news we almost have to sign/trade another starter. We will be lucky to have Harden make 15+ starts and if Marshall is already in the rotation Gaudin/Shark/Guzman will have to take Harden's place leaving us with a below average rotation and bullpen. Not to mention if Z misses time (likely looking at the last two seasons) and Dempster feels some effects of pitching the most innings ever in his career last year (nearly 3x as many innings in 08 than in 07). I don't have a good feeling about our rotation this year :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Why are you acting as if he knows any more than you do about what they did or did not know?

If the Cubs thought Harden shoulder issue was that serious I doubt they would have picked up the 7m option. Mark Prior was making very little money when they decided to keep him, and even got rid of him the last year of his deal. Plus Harden made 12 starts for us last year, so can we please stop overreacting? A healthy Harden for 30 starts doesn't make or break our season. The Cubs will be just fine with Harden for 15 starts next year and win the division still by 5 plus games. Everybody else pitching in the division is worse then us even if we have some injuries, and none of their offenses is as good as ours. So please relax

The Brewers are not in the 85-90 win range.
