well, when his velocity dropped last year, you knew there was a problem, even if folks here didn't want to admit it. I am an optimist and I could see it.

Depending on the severity of the injury and recovery time, I wonder if the Cubs would be better off with Harden having shoulder surgery and coming back later in the year more healthy for a post-season/2nd half run rather than yo-yo'ing between the DL, occasional starts, etc?

The Cubs will more than likely win the division, I just wonder what the outlooks are between hoping rest and a throwing/lifting/stretching program will heal it, trying to pitch a season a minor tear or correcting the tear via surgery.

Personally, if there are questions that he won't be able to give them 15 starts the current route they are on or that the tear won't be healed and be reaggravated, just get the surgery done with it and see what happens.

This is what I had said on it after his first start coming off the initial and still existing shoulder troubles..

lol at the people predicting the demise of the 09 cubs already.

go outside.

Don't know about everyone else, but I'd rather stay INSIDE until about mid April - early May.

Well this blows. He's got less than 3 months before the season starts to get healthy.

Hopefully he can get to Spring Training, or we're going to have to get another starter for sure.

The Reds are the team Im most afraid of. the Cards and Brewers pitching staffs are both all arounf messes as far as Im concerned. However, if Dusty can get full production from Volquez, Harang, and Cueto, and Arroyo as a solid number 4, they could be in business, especially if Baily finally comes through. Keppinger, Phillips, Votto, and Bruce are a nice heart of the lineup.

Jeff Keppinger is not a good anything, let alone part of a winning team's 'heart of the lineup'.

phillips is pretty overrated offensively also

Don't know if this was discussed, but did anyone notice that Rich Harden's name was on the provisional roster for Team Canada for the WBC?

Because that makes too much sense.

I hate to say this but I for one will not be expecting anything from Harden. Now we know why Hendry wanted Peavy so bad. I never liked Marquis but i don't get it why trade him if they knew Harden has a hole in his shoulder? Aside from getting Bradley this offseason has been horrible. We've downgraded so many spots.

There are four teams in this division that would wish they had that rotation, and the fifth should want it but wouldn't.

yeah that's not a great rotation if you want to win a championship, but if you play in a lousy division it could easily be good enough.

ESPN scroll this morning said he's not pitching in WBC.

once again leaving this team division champion winners and ungracefully bowing out of the first round

The 5th starter has ZERO impact on a playoff series.

The 4th starter starts one game at most.

Because that makes too much sense.

Shoulder surgery isn't like breaking a bone, where you wait a month or 2 for it to heal and it's good as new. Opting for surgery puts Harden's chances of pitching at all in '09 in serious jeopardy.

that is very true and understood, however, how many times has a pitcher had a "should tear"...i don't even know what in the world that is...and was still able to perform well for an entire season?

is it even possible?

How is that rotation significantly different than last year's opening day rotation? The knee-jerk negativism on this site is mind boggling. It's like a cult of flagellants. You love to whip yourselves up into a frenzy of loathing before there's any cause- if there ever is.

Needless to say, you are all overreacting to the Nth degree as usual. I must find it amusing because I keep coming back for more. Now, back to your hysterics ladies.....

Kerry Wood has been pitching with a tear in his shoulder for a few years. But he's not a starter anymore.

Opting for surgery also puts Harden's chances of ever pitching again in jeopardy to some extent. If it really is just a minor tear, he's probably better off attempting to work around it and seeing if/how it heals.

it is way different than the opening day rotation last season

Rich Hill was pitching in the beginning...and then things fell apart...we had lieber and gallager and marshall to fill in...

now what do we have to fill in...it is a completely different safety net with some real questions at the back end

sure it isn't terrible, but it is a bit of wind out of the sails of what was a sure rotation just a few days ago

any starting pitchers ever work through it with positive results?

schilling didn't work out too well last season
