It's an aspiration campaign in one sense, but Northwestern is also the only Big Ten team that actually plays in the Chicago area. It's a campaign to increase attendance.

It's a well thought out slogan. Most people don't even think about Northwestern football in the Chicago area. Hell, a lot of people don't even know where Northwestern is located. Many of our current players had never really heard of Northwestern until they started to be recruited. Hell, we have one starting senior DT from the south side who had no idea where Northwestern was located until the coaching staff contacted him. The kid lived his whole life about 20 miles away.

Then there's no way he's smart enough to get into Northwestern under legit circumstances.

I agree with it being a smart campaign that makes perfect sense. It may not be true, but it's a "title" they can make a claim on.

Northwestern is 10th in number of alumni in Chicago, ahead of only Penn State.

Is that not because they are by far the smallest school, and therefore have the smallest group of alumni by default?

With just over 8,000 undergrads, it's mostly that. However, Northwestern is a far more national school than any of the other Big Ten schools. Only 40% of undergrads are from the midwest.

I don't see how that makes them more of a national school.

It's a huge difference. I just looked up Michigan's undergraduate student body for comparison. 66% come from Michigan alone. 40% from the midwest is a really small number.

Since most students move back home after graduation, it creates a much higher percentage of Northwestern graduates who are spread out across the country.

Sure, but it's a percentage of a much smaller pie. It doesn't make them more of a national school.

You'd be surprised by the number of people who have never heard of Northwestern or at least have no idea where it's located both within the Chicago area and across the country. It's not as bad as Washington University or University of Chicago (minus location), though it's still pretty bad. If you're not from the area and you don't watch any Big Ten sports, there's a pretty decent chance you don't know where Northwestern is located.

Yeah, I'm just talking about relative percentage, not total number of graduates.

Also if you are an idiot. I would not be surprised that lots of people don't know what Northwestern is, but the vast majority of those people probably don't know where London is either.

Regardless, it's a legitimate issue for Northwestern.

As for that player, all I can say is that he graduated with a major in learning and organizational change (NU doesn't have a business major, so this is the typical track for those who want to go onto business school) with a minor in business institutions. He is also a 3-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

I got this far and figured you were being sarcastic

Do most students move back home after graduation? Even if they do, the one's that don't by and large move to Chicago. We are the capital of the Big Ten, even though there are technically no Big Ten schools in city limits. That's why I think it's funny that there's a big banner in front of Wrigley Field that says "Chicago's Big Ten team" when it's less than a block away from Purdue, Michigan State, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio St and Iowa bars (2 blocks from a Minnesota bar).

Well yeah, but it's a very obvious way to go for Northwestern to market themselves that way.

They aren't going to say "root for us please even though we're outside the city limits."

As a percentage, less of their undergrad population comes from the midwest than any other Big Ten school in the Midwest.

Hence, more national, less regional.

Primarily, yeah. Lots head back to the coasts. It's more likely that a midwest student will stay in Chicago, but not those outside the midwest.

That does not make them a more national school. UM is a huge national school. I've met more Wisconsin and Iowa people in the NYC area than Northwestern. They get a higher percentage, but they don't get more actual "national" students. Thus, they aren't more national.

This is going to be incredibly dangerous. I am glad this game doesn't mean that much.

However, it will be cool to watch and imagine how awesome those seats in right field would be.

It shouldn't be that dangerous. Teams will have to adjust their play calling a bit, but it's a padded wall. You probably don't have to defend the fade.

I'd hate to get into another semantic battle with you, but there are a few ways at looking at this:

1. Compared to other B10 schools in the midwest, a larger percentage of NU's population comes from outside the midwest -- correct

2. Compared to other B10 schools in the midwest,A larger percentage of NU grads currently live outside the midwest -- correct(?)

3. Compared to other B10 schools in the midwest,A larger number of NU undergrads come from outside the midwest --incorrect

4. Compared to other B10 schools in the midwest,A larger number of NU grads live outside the midwest -- incorrect

You are defining "more" narrowly, and only applying it to statements 3 and 4.

By your logic, the statement "Haiti is a more black country than the US" would be incorrect.

It's really gross-looking.

You can almost say they "Ryan Field'd" Wrigley. Northwestern will feel right at home.

(No offense to Northwestern fans proud of their home field)
