Someone please tell me why the Marquee is purple. Did they put something over the real marquee?

Painted it. The marquee gets repainted every so often, so it's not a big deal. Only took about an hour.

Plus, they got some sponsorship money out of Valspar to do it.

Not the best sponsorship for Valspar since it requires a second coat.

I assume the landmark status wasn't an issue or they got a waiver since it's only temporary.

"Chicago's Big Ten Team." That still makes me chuckle.

They might in the top-half of Chicago-area Big Ten fans. Maybe. For football.

I think there are more OSU fans in the city than Northwestern fans. Not to mention Michigan, State, Illinois and Iowa

I never got the impression Chicago had one big ten team. Nobody ever gave a crap about the Illini. Michigan, Indiana, Purdue and Iowa had as much representation as anybody. I think promoting it this way makes sense. But it's been a decade plus of relavance for that program and it's still not that big a deal.

Northwestern is 10th in number of alumni in Chicago, ahead of only Penn State. The marketing push was desperately needed and the Wrigley game has paid off really well so far.

And really, the marketing campaign is also trying to get fans of other Big Ten teams to adopt Northwestern as their 2nd favorite.

That's my point. There's way too many Big Ten alums in Chicago for anyone to claim that it is "their" city.

Is that not because they are by far the smallest school, and therefore have the smallest group of alumni by default?

I'd be willing to guess a larger portion of NU alumni end up on the coasts w/r/t the other Big Ten schools as well.

Yeah, I'd imagine as a percentage of alums nationwide, they'd at least be ahead of Ohio State and Minnesota, along with maybe the Michigan schools and Indiana schools.

Buncha coastal media elites from Northwestern.

With just over 8,000 undergrads, it's mostly that. However, Northwestern is a far more national school than any of the other Big Ten schools. Only 40% of undergrads are from the midwest.

There are a ton of PSU, OSU and MU alumni where I live.

I don't see how that makes them more of a national school.

It's an aspiration campaign in one sense, but Northwestern is also the only Big Ten team that actually plays in the Chicago area. It's a campaign to increase attendance.

It's a well thought out slogan. Most people don't even think about Northwestern football in the Chicago area. Hell, a lot of people don't even know where Northwestern is located. Many of our current players had never really heard of Northwestern until they started to be recruited. Hell, we have one starting senior DT from the south side who had no idea where Northwestern was located until the coaching staff contacted him. The kid lived his whole life about 20 miles away.
