Why all the love for Ben Sheets on this board? BEN SHEETS! His entire body is made of fragile italian glass. And every injury has beaten and beaten that glass until now he's just an expensive broken down, spiderwebbed pane. I mean, why dont we give Mike Hampton a call? Is Mark Fidrych still available?

I feel like i'm the white coach from remember the titans AFTER he realized that blacks and whites can work together and this board is the racist townmembers.

So you're saying we should go for Pedro instead?

I wonder if Sheets would go for something like 8 mil this year then a split option for 2010, like a 5-6 mil player option and a 15 mil team option.

Who knows at this point, especially mix in with potential incentives. With that said, it appears the cubs have no interest in him.

Vance - NOBODY wants to pitch in Texas!

Concerning the signing of another pitcher (Peavy), it needs to happen. We, the Cub fans, deserve it. It's unfortunate that D Lowe is asking so much. If he were more affordable, he would be a perfect fit for the Cubs, because you can virtually pencil it in that he is going to give you a lot of good starts without having to worry about injury. That is what this staff needs.

lowe hasn't been very good outside of dodger stadium over the least 3 seasons

I'll play nice and just make conversation.

I'm not sure Lowes road splits mean anything more than that he doesn't pitch well after not sleeping on his mattress. I don't think it was Dodger Stadium. His career road line is 4.25/1.36 while his career home line is 3.26/1.18. That includes 3 years in LA and about 8 in Boston which is not a pitcher friendly park. His sick GO/AO ratio will make him a good starter wherever he signs his next contract. He gets blown out fairly often but he's also shut down good for weeks at a time when he's on. Personally, I don't think he's a top of the line starter so $16 per for 3-4 years would end any interest from me.

Of course Sheets is an injury risk, that's why the Cubs could sign him at a discounted rate. I still say it's worth the gamble if it's a one-year deal with significant option based on performance escalators. I'm also not worried about the Cubs draft pick situation since this franchise can't seem to draft a first round stud to save their lives. Get it done Jimbo!

More like Samuel L. Jackson at the end of "Unbreakable" when he's, you know, broken:

"They call him SHEETS of GLASS!"

Fwiw, I would rather have Sheets and his potential deal over trading for Peavy.

Edit: depending on physical, especially his shoulder.

I agree. The "injury prone" rep of Sheets is way, way, overstated. Yeah, he is injury prone, but it's nothing like Harden. I'd rather have Sheets get hurt on a deal which takes his injury history into account than Peavy come to the Cubs (esp if we have to pick up that fat 22M option...) and proceed to get the injury we all know he just might get. Peavy is far, far, away from "safe" on the Injury Prone Meter. '

If Mike Hampton was actually good, and not just injury prone, then imb's comparison might be valid. I like the spirit though. Anyhow I doubt we get Sheets, Adam Dunn would be less surprising which is saying something at this point...

Sheets on a one year deal opens a lot of doors for Hendry. The Cubs would still have all there trade pieces and not be tied into another long term contract for the new owner to worry about.

There was an article in our paper today about the Rangers having interest in Sheets.

Texas met with the former ULM star at the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas in December, and is the only team that so far has publicly expressed interest.

The Rangers are also a team that has a significant need for pitching after having the highest ERA in the Major Leagues last season.

Sheets is from Louisiana and the Rangers have hired former Brewers pitching coach Mike Maddux -- and there has been much media speculation that he’ll end up in Texas.

“I’ve read some things, too,” Daniels said. “I don’t know what to make of that, except people think it’s a good fit. There is a level of interest, but what materializes from that, I can’t tell you.”

Going to Texas would be a pretty dumb move for Sheets considering it would be a short term deal and he'd be playing for another contract in a couple seasons

In that sense, yes. But it's the closest team to his home. So, if he values being close to home, then it makes sense.

it's only for a year or 2 though, and he'd be pitching to set up the rest of his life, money wise. he can move home in 10 years when he's done. it would be a really bad career move to go to texas.... especially on a short term deal.

Texas is on the verge of having a very nice team in about 2 years.

Hendry has his heart set on Peavy, which is fine with me. But if no one bites on giving Sheets a multi-year deal, the money freed up this offseason for Peavy could be used to give Sheets a one year deal while the farm remains intact. Marshall could spend another year being the 6 starter, and if the new owner doesn't want to bring in $63 million to the payroll, this is a good solution.

The longer Sheets waits to sign with a team, the better chance the Cubs have of not seeing Randy Wolf brought in.

Sheets met with the Rangers on Thursday. Mets also reportedly have interest.

Link.

Why is Sheets a good bargain?

Over the past eight seasons, he has made 30 more starts and pitched 175 2/3 more innings than righty A.J. Burnett, who signed a five-year, $82.5 million free-agent contract with the Yankees.
