When did we finalize the trade for Grady Sizemore? Because that's what we need to do if we're going to replace the production that we got from center last season.

So Grady Sizemore is an .858 OPS guy with poor defense and no speed?

this is absolutely one of the dumbest, most indefensible things you've ever said

Our CF last season put up a .290/.374/.484 line. Sizemore put up a .268/.374/.502 line. He's pretty bad defensively too... so all he's really got is a tick extra power and some speed.

It's not a terrible comparison.

well if you're going by last season's numbers then you have to mentiont that he stole bases at an excellent rate last season. 39 of 44

Sizemore is most certainly not "pretty bad" defensively

"New" UZR likes him. The DT's hate him. PBR has him right around average. And if memory serves, Dewan's +/- has him making a lot of plays out of his zone, but being somewhat shaky inside of it (a la Ronny Cedeno).

So call him average-ish, whatever.

Funny - that sounds like what would happen if the Indians did a lot of over-shifting.

Do they? I don't get much of a chance to watch them.

I was talking about offense.

The Cubs production from centerfield was third in baseball by OPS, behind New York and Cleveland. That's Carlos Beltran and Grady Sizemore and we were the highest by OBP. I was speaking in generalizations not absolute quantities. When do I speak in absolute quantities without posting a number with fifteen decimal places? Never? Really the only way we equal that production in center is by acquiring either Sizemore or Beltran - the only two centerfielders in baseball you can say with a straight face that they will OPS over 850. Josh Hamilton probably will and Curtis Granderson might.

I have no idea. Just an idea that would explain the odd data.

I love these wild overreaction threads to every move the Cubs make. It makes me think that you have to be manic depressive to be a regular poster on here. One deal makes Hendry into a baseball genius that deserves GM of the Year recognition and the next one makes him into a clueless buffoon that needs to be fired immediately. One thing is for sure. A ridculous amount of numbers will be thrown around that supposedly prove one person right & someone else wrong and people will call each other names for not agreeing with another poster. Keep up the great work.

So we can't criticize bad moves and praise good ones? Also, we can't use numbers/facts to debate whether a move was good or not?

So what exactly is the point of a message board if stuff isnt suppose to be debated about?

Debating the moves is one thing. Posting crap like "OMG Hendry is a moron" or "We are automatically going to lose 10-12 more games this year because we traded one player" is just stupid and accomplishes nothing. Surely you guys can see the difference, right?

If you're thinking his argument was that we will lose 10-12 more games just because we traded one player, you clearly aren't reading his argument.

I dont like Mpeh but you should probably actually read what he's saying instead of putting words in his mouth

I looked up Miles's ZiPS Projections for 09 for the hell of it:

.282/.326/.347 2 HR 33 RBI 2 SB and average range at 3B and 2B/ poor range at SS

I'll take the over. (on his ops)

That career .693 OPS is badass. I also like all those steals he's got. But I can't believe we got Aaron Miles when Sean Burroughs is available.

Personally, I'm disappointed the Cubs never found a way to get Tony Batista. I can't believe a guy with a batting stance that awful who managed to hit 32 home runs and 110 RBIs with an OPS+ of 80 never found his way to Wrigley.

Man...I really wish we had gone with this guy in the rule 5...

The hottest hitter available for the Rule 5 already has changed organizations this offseason. Third baseman Jesus Guzman, 24, bounced around the Texas League the last three seasons with the Mariners and then A's organizations, and has blossomed in 2008. He led the TL in batting at .364/.419/.500, and the Giants signed him after the season as a six-year free agent. He's just a fair defender at third and can play some second, but his value lies with his bat, and he had maintained his hot streak in winter ball in his native Venezuela. He was hitting .400/.500/.696 for Caracas with a league-best 42 RBIs in 32 games.

Does he bat left handed?
