At the winter meetings, it seemed like it would be a huge offseason with deals going on everywhere, and now, nadda.

This is the best day off the off-season so far.. Getting rid of Marquis,Bradley deal nearly done, and Peavy talks revisited again..Lets just hope atleast 2 out of the 3 get done ,but all 3 would be amazing..

Well Marquis hasn't been traded yet and the only person saying Bradley is close is Levine. I've learned by now that none of this really means anything

Jason Marquis-S-Cubs Dec. 30 - 8:20 pm et

In a deal expected to be finalized next week, the Rockies will get Jason Marquis from the Cubs for Luis Vizcaino, according to the Denver Post.

The Rockies will also get about $1 million, so they'll be taking on just under $5 million in acquiring Marquis to join a rotation set to include Aaron Cook, Jeff Francis, Ubaldo Jimenez and either Greg Smith or Jorge De La Rosa. We're not sure that's an upgrade at all. The Cubs also probably aren't getting any better with the deal, but they're freeing up some money they'll use to bring in a superior starter.Source: Denver Post

Jason Marquis-S-Cubs Dec. 30 - 7:07 pm et

ESPN's Steve Phillips is reporting that the Cubs are close to sending Jason Marquis to the Rockies for Luis Vizcaino.

Some cash almost certainly would be involved as well. This is a lot more about the Cubs wanting to dump Marquis than it is any desire for Vizcaino. With an open rotation spot, they could well enter the mix for Derek Lowe or Randy Wolf. It seems unlikely that the Jake Peavy talks will be revisited.Related: Luis Vizcaino

You know when it gets back to back rotoworld boxes, its close.

Deal could be done tomorrow

The Cubs are expected Tuesday to finalize the deal with Colorado and send pitcher Jason Marquis to the Rockies in exchange for reliever Luis Vizcaino...Moving Marquis does not mean the Cubs will resume talks with the Padres regarding Jake Peavy but more likely that Sean Marshall will be looked at for the fifth spot in the rotation.

Marquis is going to pitch in Coors Field?

Oy.

The Rockies also feel that he will get 80 at bats at Coors Field lol

Marquis is in the final year of a three-year contract he signed with the Cubs in December 2006. The right-hander is to be paid $9.875 million this year, and the Cubs are expected to pay $1 million of that. Vizcaino is set to make $4 million this year.

So they save $4.875 on this one, but are down one starter and up one more mediocre reliever.

Exactly. Marquis has never been lights out, but I have a feeling fans will regret this trade later this season.

So Marquis's contract ends up being 16 million for 2 years of Marquis and 1 year of Vizcaino. That ended up being a decent contract..certainly not one that Hendry will (or should) ever get praised for, but it was still one of the better pitching contracts of the last 3 years. It could become better if they are willing to dump Vizcaino if he struggles, but I'm not sure that will happen.

I am going to wait to see who the 5th starter is and how he does before I will see if I may regret the trade.

I read yesturday that the Cubs are only sending 800,000 to the Rockies, so I dunno if the 1m number is corrent. But it doesn't really matter. The Cubs are also only one the hook for 3.5m for Vizcaino this season, since his 500,000 buyout probably will go against next year payroll.

I don't see us regretting trading Marquis at all, plus 5m is alot to save and will to more then half of Bradley salary. I still think we will add another starter, but even if they don't. Chad Gaudin or Sean Marshall can both do what Marquis does. Vizcaino isn't great, but he still has good stuff. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he has a decent year next season and is a solid 6-7 inning reliever for us.

There is a small possibility that he could be a decent 6-7inning relieve, but a decent 6-7inning reliever who costs that much isn't worth it

Hendry got creamed for signing that deal, and even though Marquis is still slighty overpaid. This deal actually worked out quite well for us, and better then anyone would have probably expected. Marquis ended up going 23-18 with a 4.43 era in 61 starts. He was a strong 4-5 starter, and helped get us into the playoffs for two years. But I don't have any problem trading him, because the Cubs now have younger and cheaper options who can do what he does.

Yeah putting Marshall/Gaudin/Shark in there wouldn't be the end of the world...Also like I said before I'd be in support of Sheets for one year and if he gets hurt one of those 3 step in

If VIzcaino pitches like he in his few good season , he will be a luxury to have for the 6-7 with Marmol and Gregg taking care of the rest. I would like the Cubs to take a look at a cheap signing of Rafeal Soranio , Saito, or Chad Cordero.

Thats if you look at it that way. You could also look at as 2.8m of Marquis backloaded salary that we owed him for 07-08 anyways. With how relievers are so up and down and with Vizcaino still having good stuff, I also think it's better then a small possibility. Vizcaino claims his struggles were due to him being hurt, and not being used enough late in the year. If you take away the first two games of the season when he was probably pitching hurt(1.1 IP), and the final three weeks of the season(5.2 IP). The guys numbers are 4.03 era, 42 SO, 8 BB, 236 batting average against in 38 innings. I'm not trying to make excuses for the guy, and he still sucked last year. I'm just saying there some signs of hope that this guy could rebound next year.

Enough with the relievers. They already have too many mediocre arms back there.

Adding one more very good starting pitcher would do more for the bullpen than signing some ham-n-egger.

Gregg will become the invisible man if he doesn't throw more strikes.
