Free agent Greg Maddux will announce his retirement Monday at the baseball winter meetings in Las Vegas.

The future first-ballot Hall of Famer makes his home in Vegas, so he doesn't have far to go. Agent Scott Boras confirmed the decision on Friday.

Great career and a great man.

best pitcher of my generation...IMO

He probably belongs in the greatest of all time discussion. He won 4 straight Cy Young Awards from 1992-1995 and posted an ERA of 1.96 during that span. That's basically an ERA of 2 for 1,000 consecutive innings. He had 19 straight years with a ERA+ over 100, and 17 in a row with 15+ wins. Won every gold glove from 1990-2002, and received 18 overall. He may not have the reputation of a big game pitcher, but he had a 3.27 ERA in the postseason. Just an amazing career.

I got to watch Maddux pitch in my first Cubs game in 2004. Too bad he got roughed up a bit.

3.14 career ERA, simply amazing.

Offer him a coaching job now please.

He'd be an idiot to take one. He's rich, he's retiring...hit the golf course everyday and leave the MLB grind behind.

AFL is not far from Vegas.

Maddux is by far the best pitcher in the last 20 years.

What would it take for him to go in as a Cub? I think its a closer argument then I first realized considering he pitched a total of 9 seasons with the Cubs and 11 in Atl.

What would it take to have his number on the foul pole?

I think he will do it in maybe 5 years, unless he goes all Charles Barkley his first year retired in Vegas,

Answer to both questions is, not gonna happen. He was always quality with the Cubs, but without a doubt his greatest years (to include WS ring) were with Atlanta.

Easily belongs in the discussion of best all time. What an amazing career.

Pretty neat that his 2nd or 3rd last appearance (I can't remember) was able to be at Wrigley. Unfortunately for us Cubs fans, it came at a bad time, but it was one last chance to see Maddog before he rode off into the sunset.

I honestly think he could still pitch like an above average 4/5 starter for another 5 years if he wanted to.

Me too, especially in PetCo. I think if he wanted to he could get to 400 wins.

I would offer him a job as a pitching coach in some capacity with the organization. Make him a roving minor league coach or something so he can move around sharing his knowledge and be able to take breaks when he wants to.

How lazy are the Gold Glove guys? It seems like winning a pitching gold glove increases your chances of winning a future pitching gold glove by like 600% or something.

I'd be very surprised if Maddux doesn't end up coaching someday. I don't think it will be soon though.

Easily my favorite pitcher ever. He looked like a dentist but was every bit as nasty as anybody who pitched in baseball.

Screw Roger Clemens. There's no telling what HGH and steroids did for his career. There's evidence to suggest that he was doing them all they way back in Toronto.
