Some people have asked me whether or not Rickey Henderson belonged in the Hall of Fame. I've replied "If you could somehow split him in two, you'd have two Hall of Famers."

I can't imagine someone holding all the records Rickey Henderson has could miss the first ballot. That said, I'm sure there will be writers who don't vote for him because he played in the steroid era/if Babe Ruth wasn't unanimous no one should be/he talked in the third person. I doubt more than 25% of the writers will use that reasoning though.

He played for a quarter of a century, and his prime was not in the steroid era. Not to mention his numbers began to decline when this began to pop up more. I don't think this is even a thought for anyone with a vote.

He is a runaway as the best leadoff hitter in league history followed closely by Soriano.

please, please, please tell us that you were joking around here.

Sarchasm.

Funny comparison though...if Soriano had a little more discipline at the plate, his ceiling probably is near what Rickey's career looked like. Leadoff hitter with good power and speed. He wouldn't rack up the SB numbers because no one plays the game that way anymore, but if he walked enough to maintain a .400 OBP, he'd be a pretty similar player.

that's a terrible comparison. henderson stole a ton more bases, played very good defense and hit for a fraction of the power soriano does. they really have nothing in common. at all.

He played for a quarter of a decade, and his prime was not in the steroid era. Not to mention his numbers began to decline when this began to pop up more. I don't think this is even a thought for anyone with a vote.

Two and a half years? :D

5) This one might be my second favorite. This wasn’t too long ago, I think it was the year he ended up playing with the Red Sox. Anyway, he called San Diego GM Kevin Towers and left the following message: “This is Rickey calling on behalf of Rickey. Rickey wants to play baseball.”

Assuming he does make it, does anyone know when his induction ceremony will be?
It sticks in my mind it's usually around the end of July.

Yes, it is always hot as balls. The HOFers are always dripping with sweat.

Come on, you're from the south. You should know better.

Back in '05, I went for Ryno's induction. It was sunny and 82 degrees at 1:00 on induction day. Those people were fanning themselves and bitching and moaning about how hot it was.

Try spending the middle of the day in a cow pasture in south Arkansas on July 31 --- you'd kill for 82 degrees :)

As for Rickey, which ever writer fails to vote for him should be stripped of all credentials on the spot. There is not one reason why Rickey should be in.

Also, what's the talk about Rickey playing in the steroid era? The bulk of his career was prior to 1995.

Didn't Canseco say a crap load of players juiced in the late 80's/early 90's when there wasn't any testing being done and it wasn't in the rulebook? (was it in the rulebook then? I don't remember)

It shouldn't be obviously, but I remember at least one writer sending in (or maybe it was not sending in) a blank ballot last year in protest of the steroid era even though most of the players on the ballot didn't play during it. Basically I'm saying Rickey is a lock unless a quarter of the writers come up with some off field reasoning to not vote for him, because he's 100% deserving on the field. There's virtually no chance of that happening, even though small percentage of writers might try to make a statement of some sort.

Do we even really know for sure when the steroid era was?

No but I base it on when the stats began to really be impacted. Even if steroids were used in the late 80's I don't think we saw the same impact we had in the mid-late 90's.

98-02 specifically. So many nobodies and platoon players were hitting 30 or 40 bombs a year during that time

I think they started getting into a different class of PED in the 90s, but they were using performance enhancers going back to at least the 70s.

Brady Anderson's HOF season was 1996. There were more home runs hit in 1996 (almost a 600 HR spike from the previous season) and Arizona and Tampa weren't teams yet.

I thought Canseco himself was hearing chants of steroids in the late 80's/early 90's. I know he's only one player but I'd assume he wasn't the only one.

How does a player even get on the HOF ballot in the first place?

I believe you just have to have played in 10 seasons, be retired for 5 years, and be nominated by a screening committee.

I don't even think there's a committee. Everybody who qualifies (10-year career, retired for 5 years) is added to the ballot the year they become eligible. To stay on the ballot beyond the first year the player needs to get some specified percentage of votes (5% sticks in my mind).

Yes, definitely no screening committee. You think anyone would actually put Jeff Reboulet on a Hall of Fame ballot?
