Bruce Levine was just on ESPN 1000 with an update. He said that we should know in the next 48 hours if Peavy will be a Cub or not. He also mentioned that Towers thinks he can get seven or eight players for Peavy, but said the Cubs will only offer four or five. Also said that Padres want Marquis so that they can trade him off to another team to get another young player.

Did he still sound optimistic?

The winter meetings began here in Las Vegas with Padres GM Kevin Towers drawing a line in the sand, saying that if he could not trade Jake Peavy to the Cubs by the end of the meetings on Thursday, Peavy would remain a Padre.

Well, there's only a matter of hours left at the Bellagio, and a deal will likely not happen in time.

Considering they've been talking for three days, and both parties want the deal to occur, it's tough to see Towers turning his back on the Cubs with a hard Thursday deadline. Still, the Cubs are preparing for Plan B, confirming their interest in signing free-agent pitcher Randy Johnson in case the Peavy talks fall through.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are getting closer to finding that right fielder. A Cubs source says there are 2 or 3 possibilities as free agents, 2 other candidates via trade. Jim Hendry says that no deal is imminent, but that final outfield spot is coming into focus.

This guy is a tool. How many times he is going to screw up what Towers said? He never said a deal had to be done by Thursday, he said he had to have a good feel that something couuld get done.

I know Hendry theoretically has leverage, but I really hope he doesnt screw this up. After the October let down, we need something big this off season, and an outfield bat that may or may not be an upgrade over what we already have plus an aged, broken down mulleted pitcher arent going to cut it.

You really need to stop blaming Hendry if he can't pull off a trade because another team is asking too much. Because you would be the first one to bash him if he gets ripped off in a deal.

The Padres are not asking for "too much." There is no "too much" for Jake freakin' Peavy!. Vitters, Pie, DeRosa, and Hart??? That's too much for one of the best pitchers in baseball? Pie is terrible, and will be just like Corey Patterson. Hart gets rocked every time out. DeRosa can easily be replaced by Fontenot and is only ours for 1 more year anyways. Vitters is a great prospect, but will NEVER be as valuable as a Jake Peavy. Jim needs to stop f'in playin around and get the deal done. Give them whatever needs to be included. Leave Marquis out of it. Just get the trade done then worry about adding the RF then worry about trading Marquis separately. A team will pay 5 million dollars for Marquis. Just get the trade done first! The longer they wait, the more Peavy will want out of SD and likely accept a trade to NY or LA.

How do you know thats all he's asking for? If Marshall also needs to be included in the deal, this hurts our depth. Peavy is a very good pitcher, but he also makes a decent amount of money. Trading Vitters, DeRosa, Pie, Marshall and others is ALOT. Not only does it take away our best prospect, and a very talented 23 year old outfielder who was a very good prospect. It also takes away our depth postion player wise. What happen if Soriano or Ramirez get hurt for a long period of time? With Milton Bradley possibly being in RF and missing a bunch of games? Do you feel comfortable with Ronny Cedeno at 3b? or and outfield of Hoffpauir, Johnson and Fukudome for a long period of time. DeRosa being able to play so many postions is very valueable to this team.

Not to mention who starts if Harden goes on the DL? Mitch Akins? Randy Wells? Maybe Samardzija if he's not a late inning reliever. What if we need to make a trade midseason, who do we have to trade? Getting Peavy would be great, but giving up this type of package isn't a no brainer. Not to mention we will have to give away Marquis for nothing and eat most of his salary. I'd still make this deal, but I'll also understand if we can't make the deal. I think some get all excited about the chance of having an awesome pitcher and aren't really thinking clearly. Don't you think Hendry wants to get Jake Peavy? Obviously yes, but he has to do whats best interest for team, this isn't fantasy baseball. Because if we trade for Peavy, and win 89 games next year and miss the playoffs, everyone will be saying fire Hendry. We gotta make sure this move makes us a better team.

By the way, Churchill is basically saying that nothing has "fallen apart" in terms of the percentages he gave me. He seems to think those were around the chances all along. Who knows if that's good or bad

Since when has there been a "hard deadline" that quote by Towers saying he wanted a good feeling by thursday/end of the meetings has been blown so out of proportion by the media.

Gas Lamp Ball:

If Jake Peavy is not traded by the end of the week that doesn't mean he will be a Padre next season.

Basically the opposite Chuck just said.

It sounds like if Towers is gonna take on some of Marquis salary, he wants more talent in return. Hendry seems to have balked at that, and thats why Towers said they will probably need a 4th team to get something done. I guess we will find out by tomorrow if we can find a 4th team, or someone gives in.

If it comes down to tomorrow as being the deadline we're not going to end up with Jake. I just don't see it happening.

Damn, that's disappointing to here, Jim.

That's what I tihnk is going on too.

Seriously, if the ridiculous contract given t Marquis ends up costing us Jake Peavy....

Levine was basically saying that the holdup is that the Cubs want Marquis to be included in the deal. The Cubs would eat about 6-7 million of his contract, and then the Padres would take the rest of the 2-3 million. Then the Padres would try and ship Marquis off to another team on their own. Towers doesn't want to take that money on, but under the right circumstances he would.

-If this is true then there's no way a deal does not get done over 2-3 million dollars. I have a feeling that tomorrow before they leave, they will agree to take on Marquis' salary and get the deal done. Hendry is just trying to hold out till the last second to try and save as much money as he can from Marquis.

Hell, if he's just looking for numbers, we can sub Dero out with Ryan Harvey, Mark Pawalek and a couple of others.

LOL at us taking on all of this longterm money and Towers hesitating over 2-3 million.

So does anyone know what time the GMs leave tomorrow?

No, but I did a little search and it seems that the rule 5 is from 1030 AM - 2 PM our (chicago) time.

I would say he sounded confident that something could get done. He said that two hours ago hendry and towers had and hour and a half meeting and they both feel they can "hash something out". He also said that it is a possibility that there could be deal agreed upon in the next 24 to 48 hours and that the physicals would take place over the weekend and that there could be something official by early next week.

This deal will get done! there is no way Towers wants to pay an unhappy Peavy for most of the year and try to deal him at the deadline. Peavy can decline any trade at that point in time as well. One of the things that makes Peavy attractive is his relative cheap salary for this year. Towers is trying to get as much as he can, but no way will Jim trade him 6-7 guys even in 2 are from another club. I doubt Jim trades him both Pie and Vitters. I think it would be an either or. Hart, Marquis and prospect in Dero deal and maybe some lesser prospect of pitcher.

I think Jim tells him tomorrow this is what I can do, take it or leave it. Jim will give him some time to decide. If it goes a few weaks then Jim can always up the offer. It is 2 months until pitchers report. Players don't start drawing salary until the season starts.

Be patient Jim! Get a good but fair deal.

Yeah I don't see us eating that much of Marquis contract, and the Padres not being ok with it. I think it's more we want them to take Marquis at least 5m, and they want more players back to do that. Otherwise it doesn't make sense because we can just keep Marquis if were gonna pay 7m of his 9.8m contract. It doesn't really save us much money, and not worth it. Especially if we wait to late January we will probably be able to get rid of Marquis without eating more then 3-4m.

Since everything is related to Peavy, we should probably throw this in here:

LAS VEGAS -- The Chicago Cubs have made trade inquiries about third baseman Chone Figgins, but it will be difficult for the Angels to figure out what they might even ask for in return until they determine whether they can retain free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira or acquire a closer such as Brian Fuentes.

The Cubs and Padres are trying to engineer a four-team trade that would send San Diego ace Jake Peavy to Chicago, and the deal would probably cost the Cubs valuable utility man Mark DeRosa, who played second base, third and the outfield this past season.

Figgins, a former super utility player who has started at six different positions, would be a perfect fit for the Cubs, who could also use a good leadoff hitter.

The Angels are not actively trying to trade Figgins, who has also drawn heavy interest from the Chicago White Sox in recent years, but if they can't re-sign Teixeira, Figgins could be a valuable chip in a deal for a power bat.

The Angels have also expressed interest in Fuentes, a free agent who could command a deal in the three-year, $30-million range, but if they don't sign the left-hander, they could seek bullpen help in a deal with the Cubs.

From Churchill-

I'd say 50-50 on that. I only know one Sd guy these days. He doesn't seem nearly as optimistic as the Cubs do.

Mike just texted me to say "leaning toward yes."

The GM's and staff all leave at different times, depending on how quickly they wrap up talks.

Last year Gillick left at 9am local time, but Beane was there until 9 pm.

I asked who Mike was and he told me that he couldn't share his last name/position with the Cubs with me. Any guesses?

As for the e-mail, it might make sense that the Cubs would be more optimstic. It sounds like the Padres are asking for more in return for taking on Marquis and that the Cubs are balking. Maybe the Padres guy doesn't think the Cubs will cave, while the guy on the Cubs side says "leaning toward yes", meaning theymight be willing to give in. Maybe I'm reaching... who knows.

Do you guys think any of this Rule V talk has anything to do with Donald Veal?? He is listed as one of the best players available in this draft. So maybe the Padres are waiting to see if they can draft him with their 3rd overall pick or whatever they have. And if they do, then the Cubs would then have to include another prospect or something, but if they don't draft him, then maybe he is to be included or something along these lines?? Cuz isn't Veal one of the Cubs better prospects? Why wasn't he protected?
