I'm pretty sure SD said if there wasn't progress by the end of meetings they'd move on, but considering Philly, O's and now the Twins are trying to get involved, I'm sure that's considered "progress."

Yeah he never said a deal had to be done by the end of the meetings. Infact it sounds like odds are pretty bad that a deal will be done by the end of the meetings. It just had to basically be going somewere, and look like it could possibly get done. If the reports are even close to true, I think we have made some progress.

Yeah that guy doesnt know what hes talking about considering Towers himself said the trade would most likely happen after the Rule V draft.

Sources: Cubs dig in over Padres demands

LAS VEGAS Jake Peavy to the Chicago Cubs. It was a trade that once seemed inevitable.

It doesn't seem so inevitable anymore.

Jake Peavy, the 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner, is owed $63 million over the next four seasons.

As the clock ticked down toward the final hours before the two key principles, the Cubs and San Diego Padres, exit the winter meetings, these teams appear to be no closer to a deal than they were 24 hours ago.

And since Padres GM Kevin Towers has already announced he needs to know before he leaves whether there's a deal there to be made, that means this long march could be leading them nowhere at all.

According to two sources with knowledge of the discussions, the Cubs have dug in firmly on what they're willing to give up. And when you think through their side of this, you can understand why.

• Towers has already announced that the Cubs are the only team he's still talking to about Peavy.

• The Cubs have agreed to take on all $63 million that Peavy is guaranteed over the next four years, which usually means some sort of discount for the team absorbing the money.

• And Peavy or no Peavy, the Cubs are going to have the best rotation in their division.

So unlike the Padres' negotiations with the Braves last month, this time it seems to be the team on the other end -- i.e., the Cubbies -- that believes it has the leverage.

Now add in all the other complications we've been discussing ad nauseum -- the Cubs' uncertain ownership situation, their need to dump payroll to add a player this pricey and their simultaneous pursuit of a left-handed outfield bat. And what do you have?

You have a puzzle that seems to be getting harder to put together, not easier. That's what.

But wait. There are still more complications.

Mark DeRosa, who originally loomed as the potential key to the three-team part of this equation, no longer appears to be a player the Cubs particularly want to trade -- not in this deal, anyway.

Since word leaked out that DeRosa might be available, the Cubs have been bombarded with calls from other clubs interested in DeRosa. So some of those teams report that Cubs GM Jim Hendry is telling them he might deal DeRosa separately, but he doesn't really want to deal him at all. So that, said one source, "has opened up a whole 'nother can of worms."

He wants us to stop thinking about Peavy

Posted

So from everything we've head from Towers, he said nothing would be done until after the rule 5, right? And that's tommorrow morning. Anyone know the exact time?

So my hope is after the Padres get their rule 5 stuff sorted, we get reports saying a deal is agreed upon tommorrow afternoon or night, and then it is made official the next day after physicals and all that.

Absolutely nothing new is in there and it almost seems like whoever wrote it is trying to create something because he hasn't gotten word from either side today on where the talks are at. The fact that ESPN is saying that a deal is unlikely to happen gives me all the more confidence I need to believe that a deal is going to happen. Just because of the fact that Derosa is being made semi-available probably strengthens the Cubs chances to get Peavy because they can weigh multiple offers from teams and take the strongest one to help them land Peavy, it might take a little longer now, and ESPN can go on the FAKE DEADLINE Towers never really set and all, but by getting more teams involved for Derosa only increases our chances of getting Peavy IMO.

Hey, remember the time when everyone thought the Cubs were going to get Jake Peavy?

You mean right now? You need to stop getting so excited or every report that says it's close and then getting all bummed out any time someone says it might not be.

Ther'es nothing really knew from Stark there. Like someone else said, it sounds like more opinion than anything else. Plus he's been pumping the "Cubs are standing firm" POV for a few days now. His source could easily be somebody from the Cubs who is putting that out there on purpose.

Well at this point there is no doubt that Hendry can have Peavy if he wants. If he's come this far and gotten this close, I wouldn't think he'd let a small difference in talent given up let this thing fall apart. I think there will still be some haggling and posturing that goes on for a couple days.

I think Jayson Stark proved over the last few days, that he's not a good sources of information on the Peavy trade. I'm still waiting for a article that has Kevin Towers quotes. With so many rumors right now, those are the only things I really find interesting.

LAS VEGAS - The end could be near as Padres general manager Towers and Cubs general manager Jim Hendry are to speak at least one more time before the meetings end Thursday.

Towers has gone as far to tell reporters that he will know one way or the other by then if a deal is to be had.

"We had more dialog today than any other day," Towers said of his talks with Hendry. "We'll know tomorrow [Thursday]. Before we check out of this hotel ... we'll know if we have a deal. This has been the entire focus of baseball ops [operations]."

Towers said for the first time Wednesday that, in all likihood, a fourth team would need to be involved in a deal with the Cubs and the Phillies to ensure the Padres get in return the package of players, Major League-ready pitching as well as prospect, they want for Peavy.

"[Getting] a number of players fills more holes, but there has to be a couple a guys in this deal who can make an impact on our team soon," Towers said.

Towers thinks the only thing holding up the deal is the need for the Cubs to move one or two contracts - namely pitcher Jason Marquis and his $9.875 salary and possibly second baseman Mark DeRosa and his $5.5 million salary for 2009.

The Cubs could ask the Padres to assume part of Marquis' salary, something that Towers would rather not do. However, he said Wednesday that under the right circumstances and the right return of players, he would consider it.

The Phillies are said to want DeRosa and are thought to be willing to trade left-handed pitcher J.A. Happ, 26, who was 8-7 with a 3.60 ERA at Triple-A Lehigh Valley a year ago. Happ profiles as the kind of pitcher the Padres like - a strike-thrower with strong control - and one who could slide into the starting rotation in 2009.

There are some reports that 24-year-old Kyle Kendrick, who was 11-9 with a 5.49 ERA with the Phillies last season. A Padres source said one rumored deal that would land the Padres shortstop Jason Donald or pitcher Carlos Carrasco from the Phillies was entirely false.

The Cubs could offer a package of third baseman prospect Josh Vitters and possibly an outfielder, Felix Pie, in return as well as a reliever Kevin Hart.

He certainly didn't portray Hendry as the guy we are familiar with. While I'm sure the DeRosa interest is real, I'm sure Hendry isn't telling Towers to back off on his demands. The latest demands are more than fair, as is Peavy's small market contract extension.

Hendry just got everyone to finally shut up about the key elements of the deal that will likely go down late tomorrow or soon after.

The fact that Towers is now saying that a 4th team would probably need to be involved is kind of worrisome, because that means something probably changed.

I think the reason we haven't seen a Towers quote in a while is because him and Hendry are actually working on a deal, a lot of his quotes in the media were done early in meetings before they sat down and it was all posturing/negotiating through the media to try and drive up prices. Now that they have been there a few days and are sitting down he likely has less time to talk to the media and needs to get down to business with Hendry and get a deal hammered out. I think the fact neither Hendry/Towers, Towers more than Hendry, have spoken to the media today speaks volumes to the whole situation that both are trying to get a deal done and are too occupied and they don't have the time and energy to be negotiating/posturing through the media.
