Levine sure is getting a lot of scoops....hmmm. I don't wanna start letting myself think the Peavy thing is a possibility.

Hey Banedon......Believe. It's ok, you're a Cubs fan. Tell yourself "we are getting Peavy."

My New Year's resolution is to not believe the Peavy rumors unless/until a trade is officially announced.

And I may set a record by breaking my resolution before the new year even begins. :D

If you could lock-in DeRosa's 2008 numbers again, then maybe you'd hesitate to see him go with Bradley coming in. However, I'm not sure it's all that likely to happen. He's a nice player, but he's in his mid-30's now. I don't like counting on guys to repeat career years, let alone career years at 34. I still say trade high with the guy going into his final year of his contract.

Agreed. It's kind of weird though for me. DeRosa is one of my favorite players and he's also (I'm assuming) a fan favorite. But everyone always clamors for Hendry to sell high, and now that it seems inevitable that he actually is selling high on DeRosa, as he should be, it kind of sucks because I really like DeRosa. He's one of those guys that just fits in well on the team.

But if it means we get Peavy, adios Mark! Thanks for the memories, but we got a Cy Young winner who needs a new team, pronto!

According to MLBTR, Levine said that the Cubs are close to a deal for DeRosa to be traded to the Indians for two or three young pitchers. I guess those can then be used in a Peavy deal or to reinforce our bullpen?

Both ESPN 1000 and the Cubs have had a busy day. We just learned that the North Siders have traded former Cubs second baseman and ESPN 1000 contributor, Mark DeRosa, to the Cleveland Indians for three young pitchers.

The Cubs will receive RHP Jeff Stevens, RHP Chris Archer and LHP John Caub. All three young pitchers are strikeout artists. Stevens averaged over 13 strikeouts per nine innings pitched in his stints at double-A, and triple-A last season. Beyond saving money, the key to this trade are adding to the inventory of young pitchers that could be available to use in a trade for Padres' ace Jake Peavy.

It's been known for a long time that San Diego general manager Kevin Towers is looking for pitching back in any potential deal for Peavy. With Ronny Cedeno and Felix Pie both out of options (this means they cannot be sent back to the minor leagues without clearing waivers), both of them could be used along with some of this young pitching inventory to obtain Peavy.

A Peavy deal is still predicated on approval by the Cubs' next ownership, in which they would have to sign off on the $63 million Peavy is owed over the next four years. Once again, Hendry has saved $11 million over the last two days. That money will go towards the $4.5 million that Aaron Miles will make over the next two years and Milton Bradley's contract, which should be finished in the next 10 days or so.

Everyone seems fixated on signing Bradley and trading for Peavy.

What if Hendry goes a complete different direction by signing Lowe or Sheets, and trading for Hermida or Scott?

Naturally that would contradict the Levine intel that Bradley is a done deal, but still interesting to consider. Cheaper too (in $$$ and players).

I don't want Sheets. We already have an injury prone pitcher in Harden.

We're not doing this because we're not in a position to go bidding against the Yankees for pitching: Lowe.

From the ESPN.com article about the DeRosa/Miles moves:

Neither are Chicago's moves expected to trigger a trade for Peavy. Sources tell ESPN that there are no ongoing talks between the Cubs and Padres involving Peavy.

So in terms of next year's team, we just traded DeRosa and Marquis for Bradley and Miles

Yep. That's not good. Peavy pretty much has to happen now to make this offseason a success.

And at worst that means Marshall in the rotation. So it's really Marshall replacing Marquis, Bradley replacing Fuku and Miles/Fontenot replacing DeRo. At worst that's a wash. And I think it's an improvement.

I'm angry/disappointed, but not surprised.

Fukudome is gone?

Actually we've more or less traded Reed Johnson, Mark DeRosa, and Jason Marquis for Milton Bradley, Mike Fontenot and Sean Marshall. We're better off because of the moves. Personally I would have liked to have gotten different players in the Marquis and DeRosa moves but getting them moved was more important than the guys we got back. Miles though was unnecessary but in a backup role, he can't hurt us too much.

I hate to say this, but......I am going to trust Levine on this one.

Just because the deal is alive, it doesn't mean that its going to happen or that this move had any bering on a Peavy trade.

How come we can assume the Bradley signing and not the Peavy trade? :)

I see what you are saying. Yeah, if you put it that way, then the Cubs did get better. Huge upgrade over what they had in RF. Slightly below lateral move at 2B. Slightly above lateral move at SP.

Well, what position would Bradley be brought in to play? RF, right? I thought Fukudome was moving to CF to platoon with Reed.

Who's got the Yankees in on Lowe?

AFAIK so far the Mets are Lowe's only serious pursuer. The Cubs are amongst a handful of teams seemingly on the periphery.
