You would think this quote from last night would have been played up a bit more...:

There's a buzz in the lobby that the Jake Peavy trade will go down tomorrow, at which point we'll find out if the Orioles are involved.

http://masnsports.com/2008/12/the-40-man-roster-and-whos-exp.html

Eh, it's very interesting. I hadn't seen it before. But I can't let myself get excited about something like that.

hahaha san diego is so poor they couldnt afford anything but a cab ride from san diego to vegas for towers. and they even had to split the tab halfway with another passenger.

Glad I wasn't the only one who caught that. A cab for 4.5 hours? They couldn't rent them a town car with a driver , or even fly Towers there coach? Maybe he could drive himself ? 4.5 in a cab, I would bet that all three of the peolpe in that car where talking into there bluetooth headsets the whole way there.

That's insane. Hell, I live an hour and change from our closest airport. And even that close, when our company needs to send people there we take limo's rather than cabs. Because it's the same price and who doesn't like a nice limo ride.

Insanity.

Is it me or does it seem like the writers outside of Chicago and San Diego have been off on this possible deal? I mean Miles and Levine haven't jumped the gun and have instead have stated that the talks are still going but nothing is definite. We have also heard about possible prospects involved but nothing certain. Than you have the San Diego writers who have reported the cubs in the talks and possible three team deal but haven't called it a lock. And then you look at a writer like Olney or Stark and they all but denied the possibility about the cubs getting peavy and instead have insisted that the Braves will end up getting Peavy. But now that it seems obvious that peavy wont go to the braves, they're now jumping the gun and saying the cubs might get him. Then i just read that stark says there a zero chance peavy gets trade during the winter meetings. I'm kind of getting annoyed by ESPN writers because they like to put something out there even though its a guess so that if it comes true, then they're looked upon as legit sources. But when they're totally wrong ( Like Olney was with the Harden Trade) they never mention it or acknowledge the trade as much.

I honestly think the Peavy deal will get done soon, i'm talking about tomorrow or by thursday. It wouldn't surprise me if i heard a levine report on the way home that the cubs got peavy. This possible trade gives me the feeling i got with the harden trade. At first i thought it wasn't possible or thought it might be weeks away, but then i remember driving on my way home from work and bruce levine interruption Mac, Yurko and Harry with the breaking news of Harden to the Cubs. Hopefully we get something like that soon cause i'm tired of checking website and message boards for the latest updates.

Don't know if it's been posted yet because I'm too lazy to read this entire thread. But this mornings Sun Times said "Sources say Cubs GM Jim Hendry is very close to trading for the Padres' Jake Peavy"

It says it would likely be a 5-1 deal with us sending Pie, Marshall, Vitters, Cedeno, and Hart. That's pretty similar to what the post above me says, it looks like. The article also said though that it's possible for the Cubs to trade Pie to Baltimore for Garret Olson who would then be flipped to SD.

This is getting fun.

I'm not I understand the hold up. Couldn't we just send Pie to San Diego in the deal, then San Diego can send Pie to Baltimore for Olson?

There's no hurry on the Padre's part. Plus, if you were Towers, would you really want Pie just so you would have to deal with Baltimore, and allow them the opportunity to possibily reneg and ask for more than Pie? Or have Angelos go stupid again and decide he's not trading Olson for anything less than Pie, Kouz and Adrian G?

3:23 p.m. — Pads, Cubs talking Peavy

San Diego general manager Kevin Towers acknowledged this morning that he is talking to only one team about ace righthander Jake Peavy: the Chicago Cubs.

"We should have a pretty good idea of where we are by Thursday," Towers said. "We should know if we could move on or drop it."

Towers added that he approached Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti about a Peavy deal, but that did not gain traction becuase of the asking price of young talent.

Towers also said it is possible the Padres would start the 2009 season with Peavy in the rotation and put him back on the trade market in mid-season. Towers said the trade that sent shortstop Khalil Green to St. Louis eased some of the pressure on him to cut payroll.

The Padres, facing economic problems and the pending divorce of owner John Moores (which could induce further cuts), are cutting their payroll by about $30 million to about $70 million for next season

2:33pm: Kevin Towers told Ken Rosenthal he's talking to only the Cubs about Peavy. He expects to have a good idea on whether to drop it or move forward by the end of the Meetings. Towers approached Ned Colletti but talks didn't get far.

It sounds like things are pretty serious, but I wouldnt expect a done deal for a little while.

2:37pm: Joel Sherman learned from Towers that if he doesn't reach an agreement on a Peavy deal with the Cubs at the Meetings, he will keep the pitcher to start the season. The Dodgers are apparently the only other team to which Peavy has approved a trade.

Sherman adds that the Cubs "are willing to let [Peavy] keep his no-trade clause." Not sure if Sherman is trying to say the Cubs would replace Peavy's partial no-trade rights for 2011 and part of 2012 with full no-trade powers.

Huh? Towers is in this mess because he already has full no-trade powers, otherwise we wouldn't even be in the conversation. Sherman doesn't know what he's talking about.

edit...nm...I see he's referring to a change that will happen a few years later and not his NTC he has right now...

If that's true and not just posturing, I'd put the Cubs chances of getting Peavy down to like 40%

You still would have more than two whole months of offseason before pitchers and catchers report. Why stop so soon?

I think Towers is just posturing and letting the Cubs know, since they have been designated Peavy's only suitor, that there is another option other than "Peavy to the Cubs". That option is "Peavy stays with Padres" He probably wants to get this trade done so they can manage the rest of their offseason. He's trying to make Peavy more of a priority to the Cubs than a LH OF, which is what everyone is reporting is priority number 1.

yeah, that didnt really instill confidence in me that this will get done. up til this point we heard they had to move peavy. if they think they can keep him until the deadline, we won't have enough to get it done then i feel.

The hypothetical Fangraphs chart of this deal is even crazier than the Roberts chart last year.

That's not quite what Towers said.

He basically said if "progress" wasn't made by the end of the meetings, he'd have to stop the talks. There is nothing serious going on yet between these two teams. I'm blogging like a crazy man, if you want to stop by at the Daily Herald. I'll do the best I can to check in here.

Thanks for checking in Bruce. As you can imagine, the interest here has built to a pretty high level...
