They just said it again, and said that the Cubs will now focus on a leadoff bat and a power left RF'er (according to Kaplan I assume).

ugh

Then Furcal or Roberts seem like logical choices.

If that lead-off bat means Furcal, I could go for that only because Furcal would be an improvement over Theriot. If it means anything else, I'll pass.

I love the offseason, but so far all the Cubs have done to improve on 2008 is lose Kerry Wood, Bobby Howry, Jim Edmonds, and Darryl Ward (and maybe Henry Blanco). We haven't made any improvements yet. I vote for an improvement ASAP. I don't want to hear we are out of anything yet - we should have enough money to do anything at this point.

Maybe the Cubs weren't sure they where in on the Furcal Sweepstakes ,his agent is in town and Furcal was said be cutting his list down to three teams maybe there close on a deal with Furcal .

The Atlanta-Journal Constitution says the Cubs are still after Peavy.

Link.

With Ryan Dempster’s $52 million contract taken care of, Hendry is still trying to find a way to fit Padres ace Jake Peavy into the picture. The Cubs are the sole remaining bidders for Peavy, who could be the final piece of a dream rotation that already includes Dempster, Carlos Zambrano, Rich Harden and Ted Lilly.

“It’s going to take a while,” Padres GM Kevin Towers told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “They have a couple of players to pick from that we are interested in, but anything with them is going to potentially involve a third or a fourth team. We’re focusing only on [the Cubs].”

Old or not, it references the continued pursuit or Peavy after a Dempster signing.

I heard Kaplan on Chicago Tribune Live tonight. He said the Cubs are done trying to trade for Peavy, and those prospects will go towards adding a leadoff hitter. He said the Cubs will try to trade for Chone Figgins(writers raved about how good he was) or Brian Roberts. Then mentioned Ibanez, Abreu and Bradley as opitions for RF. But I would pay very little attention to these comments, until we hear this type of info from a better source. He's said stuff like this in the past, and the Cubs have gone in the oppsite direction. Kaplan hasn't shut up about moving Soriano out of the leadoff spot all offseason, so it's not a surprise he thinks or hopes the Cubs will add a leadoff hitter. FWIW Kaplan also said he thinks Ryan Dempster will win 20 games next year.

If Hendry somehow screws up this Peavy deal, he will officially be dead to me.

How can he screw up something that was never clsoe to happening? Peavy to the Cubs has always been a long shot. You're acting like he could have him right now if he wanted, which is not true.

Something that was not close to happening? Let me see..... The Cubs were one of 5 teams that had a chance at Peavy. Then they were one of 4 teams. Then they were one of 3 teams. Then they were one of 2 teams. Then they were one of 1 teams.

But, yeah, you're right. It was never close to happening.

Peavy trade to the Cubs isn't close because it's not like we can trade guys in our system to get him right now. We need to find a third or forth team that would be willing to give us the right players to get something done. It's a very hard trade to pull off, and not Hendry fault if he can't get a deal done. They'd need a personal janitor for Kaplan at the CSN studios if they got Figgins.

Umm, wasn't "not close to happening" an exact quote from Towers multiple times? He just said in that radio interview a couple days ago that the Cubs don't have the pieces and that it would take a 3rd or 4th team, and that it would be very complicated and would take a while. So that is close? Riigghhhhhhhtttt. The fact that the Cubs were one of the few teams talking with Towers about Peavy does in no way mean something was close. Come on.

Don't use logic with BigBadB. He says that we were close even though it was literally impossible for us to get it done with the players we currently have, so it must be true.

I can't blame Hendry if he can't find a third team. I will blame him if he trades any of our better prospects for Figgins.
