The Washington Nationals began their rebuilding process Monday, agreeing to a trade for left fielder Josh Willingham and lefty starter Scott Olsen of the Florida Marlins for a package of players.

The Nats traded away second baseman Emilio Bonifacio, who hit .243 in 49 games last season, and two minors leaguers in pitcher P.J. Dean and shortstop Jake Smolinski, sources told ESPN's Peter Gammons.

Nats acquire Scott Olson/Josh Willingham.

Interesting that Florida got a 2B and SS back in the trade. Would they move Ramirez or Uggla?

Nevermind. Someone beat me to the punch. Lock it up.

Uggla is a 3B waiting to happen. Hanley is a CF waiting to happen, but that won't happen.

I'd imagine Mike Jacobs will also be on the block. IF will probably be: Uggla 3B, Ramirez SS, Bonafacio 2B, Cantu 1B

I'm guessing this just slipped your mind, but Jacobs was already traded to the Royals a couple weeks ago.

You know what it crossed my mind, but I thought I was imagining things. I went to the Marlins ESPN page (first mistake) and it didn't have anything about Jacobs leaving. It had today's trade already up, though.

Uggla has a below average arm for a MLB second baseman. No way that he can move to third on an every day basis. He make Theriot look like he has a cannon. Maybe they are going to move Uggla to first?

Edited to add last thought.

Very underwhelming deal for both Willingham and Olsen, it makes me wonder what will it take to get Hermida?

Indeed. The Marlins sure look to be bailing on all of their guys with questionmarks.

That's pretty a pretty underwhelming package for Olsen and Willingham.

Agreed. Wonder what the Cubs could have gotten for Olsen and Hermida.

How cute, the Natspos think they can put a baseball team together.

The way the Marlins operate, maybe we can get Hanley Ramirez for Sam Fuld and Mike Wuertz.

Sam Fuld is untouchable, didn't you get the memo?

If he doesn't get Peavy and Demp is gone, he has to go after Burnett I think.

Either Burnett or Lowe.

C.C. Sabathia?

Im thinking if Hendry loses out on Dempster, that means that someone offered well more than he was willing too, thus inflating the pitching market so that the 3 mentioned above would demand even more money, and as far as starting pitching goes, we'd either walk out empty handed or end up settling for a lesser pitcher like a Freddy Garcia, Oliver Perez, or Jon Garland.

With the trade of Willingham, I wonder if Hermida will still be on the trading block. If he is an interesting throw in on the deal might be Alfredo Amezaga. I'm assuming Cedeno will be in a trade going someplace. Amezaga is a switch hitter and has played every position except pitcher and catcher. Gives Lou lots of options with DeRosa and Amezaga on the team.
