Was he using splits to say that Bradley wasn't really good last season, or just that his numbers are pumped up big time by Arlington? The second is true, but not the first.

It was done to address the point made earlier - which was in my nested quote - that Bradley last year was first in OBP, first in OPS. No denying that if he is able to replicate his road numbers that will be a great addition, but we shouldn't expect him to replicate last year's overall numbers.

The numbers of games he's played in a season since 2002.

Only three years he missed games due to being on the DL though. The other seasons he didn't play because he was a young player who didn't get playing time or had off the field issues. Bradley being hurt from 05-07 is a bit of a concern. But if your doctors/trainers put him through test, and he passed them all. So you would think he's healthy now, and there's nothing wrong with him or it would have scared them away. Being a full-time RF and playing half his games in a smaller ballpark like Wrigley should also help him. In 2005 he was still in CF, and even started 15 of those 61 games in CF in 07, and neither were small ballparks. It's a risk signing him, but if he can play even 120 games per season he's a bargin at 10m per season, with the offensive numbers he will most likely put up.

We all know those numbers and it is a concern, but that's not what SweetZombieJesus was saying. There isn't much to complain about with thise home/road splits. Just as there isn't much to complain about his 07 numbers in Oakland and San Diego. I'd prefer Dunn too, because of health reasons, but Bradley is a stud when he plays no matter what park he is playing in.

So he's a hot head who could well miss a good portion of the season for losing it? That's better than getting hurt, I guess. :-k

The fact of the matter is that he's averaged slightly less than 100 games played from 2002 to 2008. No matter what the reasoning is, he missed that time - and he's extremely likely to miss the time again.

We could have spent $2-3 million more for Adam Dunn, gotten great production and not had to worry about Bradley missing time for whatever reason - and thus seeing Joey Gathright, Micah Hoffpauir and Reed Johnson getting more time than they should.

I understand. I just think his time missed can't be overlooked, despite his awesome numbers.

No because most of that stuff happen when he was a young player in 02-04 and it's unlikely to happen now.

As others pointed out yesturday Bradley mixed with Hoffpauir, Gathright and Johnson is still better then Dunn. When you factor in how much Dunn defense would hurt us in RF. But you're also expecting injuries to be there, that aren't currently there.

Bradley OPSing .860 with average defense for 90 games plus Gathright/Johnson/Fukudome/Hoffpauir playing the other 70 on matchups is in all likelihood better than Dunn putting up a .900 OPS with horrific defense for 150 games. That's what Haltz was getting at with the Wins Above Replacement numbers.

Like when he lost it on an ump at the end of the season in a playoff run while with the Padres - in 2007? The reason he got hurt one of the times in 07 was because he went loco on the first base ump after what he thought was a bad call. He ripped his hammy, or something like that.

As much as I respect haltz and his understanding of sabermetrics, I find it hard to believe that Bradley/Gathright/Reed/Hoff would be substantially better than 150 games of Dunn.

And I'm expecting injuries because Bradley is extremely injury prone. He'll miss time. He has missed substantial time in basically every season he's ever played.

The reason he went nuts on the ump was, supposedly (his coach confirmed it, IIRC), the ump made some racist comments. That doesn't necessarily justify anything, but it's a whole lot more understandable than him just thinking it was a bad call.

I believe he tore his ACL as his coach was restraining him. Just a freak injury.

Freak injury? He'll fit right in with the Cubs then :D

Much more understandable if the ump made a racist comment, but he still went berserk and got hurt.

It was a freak injury, but when a guy's career is littered with injuries it can't just be ignored.

I know Dunn can hit with power, but playing right field shouldn't even be considered. When they signed Soriano and said he would play center,I felt he would be a better in right because of his arm and speed. Pie was a year or two away and was the centerfielder of the future. If they moved him there, then they could sign Dunn to play left. Watching Soriano track balls in left, right would probably be an adventure too.

Fukudome/Johnson in center with Bradley in right is ok. When Bradley gets hurt it becomes Gathright/Johnson in center with Hoffpauir/Fukodome in right. Fukodome would actually face the leftys. His splits against leftys were pretty decent. Unless they have a right handed bat to play right. (Please not Aaron Miles) I'd rather have Pie than Gathright but I doubt he'll be with them by opening day. Actually I expect Fukodome to rebound next year.

You can't really call that a freak injury when it happens to a guy who is always hurt. It's just another example of how fragile he is.

How about his .297/.395/.622 against the NL last year?

Line drive off of Prior's elbow was just another example of how fragile he is?

I hope you don't really think that's a good comparison, because that's pretty bad. When you get a line drive off your elbow, you expect to get hurt. That's not being fragile. Did you see the Bradley injury? He barely even got his leg twisted or anything. The vast majority of the time, that does not result in a torn ACL.... unless you're really fragile. My grandma took a worse look fall than that a couple weeks ago and she didn't tear anything

I mean, come on. Comparing a line drive off the elbow to a harmless looking fall resulting in a torn ACL is pretty ridiculous. How many times does a line drive off the elbow in that same spot result in a fracture? How many time does a fall like Bradley's result in a torn ACL?

I wasn't making a comparison, just pointing out ridiculous your generalization was.

A more ridiculous comparison was you insinuating that your grandma is less fragile than Bradley because she didn't tear her ACL when she fell. (A fall that was worse than Bradley's!)

Yes, the guy has spent a lot of time on the DL, but that doesn't mean he can't be involved in a freak injury or accident.
