A letter to the Tribune today suggested that the Cubs trade Soriano to the Red Sox. He thought Soriano would possibly waive his NTC because the Sox have a ton of money and he would probably hit 40+ HRs in Fenway. He could replace Ortiz as DH or be a real asset in LF with his arm. In exchange, the Cubs would get either Bay or Drew and Crisp/young pitcher. Don't know if it is possible, but this is what the off season is for - speculation, rumors, and fantasy.

Trading Bay for Soriano owuld be silly. Bay is a better player and is 35435434x cheaper.

At this point I can't really imagine any team even considering taking on Soriano's contract.

I would trade Soriano for Boston's equivalent of Mark Pawelek.

Of course, Boston probably doesn't have a Mark Pawelek. Their amateur player procurement and development organization isn't a joke.

Kyle Wieland come on down!!!

Yeah Soriano for Drew is just a great idea. Lets trade for a guy with less power and much higher injury risk.

And more ability and a better contract.

Drew makes Mark Prior look like Cal Ripken.

The biggest benefit would be to get out of Soriano's contract and the ability to sign a LF that could be just as if not more productive.

I won't argue that Drew is better than Soriano. But Drew's contract is a better contract. The Cubs could use the savings to improve the line-up.

But it would be throwing money away when Drew spends half the year on the DL.

His games played the last 4 seasons have been 72, 140, 146, 109. If he could stay healthy, he'd be one of the premier players in the game. However, that's a big if. All that talent does you no good if it's sitting on the bench injured.

meanwhile Soriano has been in perfect health the last two years

Alfonso Soriano has played fewer or the same number of games as JD Drew the last two seasons.

Plus Drew doesn't have one of the worst contracts in baseball.

Since they signed their big contracts-

Year GP AVG/OBP/SLG/OPS OPS+
Drew's 07- 140 .270/.373/.423/.796 105
Soriano's 07- 139 .299/.337/.560/.897 123

Drew's 08- 109 .280/.408/.519/.927 139
Soriano's 08- 109 .280/.344/.532/.876 123

Soriano clearly wins 2007 while Drew clearly wins 2008.

IMO, if close to even; take the much smaller contract

Actually, it's more like the other way around. But like somebody else said, how healthy has Soriano been the last 2 years.

All I know is in 10 full seasons Drew has played over 140 games 3 times (but never over 150). In eight full seasons Soriano has played under 140 in just the last two and in all but three played 156+.

And both players make more than they are worth (Sori will make 5 mil more per year for remainder of contract than Drew).

Most likely Cubs/Red Sox trade would involve Derek Lee. Lee probably wouldn't waive his NTC to go there though. Red Sox could go hard after a 1B this year, unless they think JD can play there, then they can get an OF.

Why don't you think that D-Lee would waive his NTC to go to Boston?

He's whined about Cubs fans demands, I don't think he'd like Boston.

How does this equate to Drew making Prior look like Ripkin? Drew is injury prone, clearly, but he's also productive and generally able to play significant chunks of every season. I'd love to see if Boston would deal him, he could be like the Rich Harden of the lineup. This team is good enough that they don't need him to play 155 games a year to win, if they could get 110-120 games out of him and having him healthy for the postseason, I'd be all for it. Perfect platoon opportunity for Reed Johnson. I don't see Boston taking Soriano at all.
