I'm curious if the Chicago area Cubs fans look down on Cubs fans from out of the area that have no ties to the area. WGN has brought the Cubs to the US, and people like myself from Ark/Okla have become die hard fans.

I equated it to Middle Eastern Muslims not recognizing black muslims.

Yeah, ummmmmm, okay.

I grew up in the Chicago area but have lived in the NY area for over a decade. I've met quite a few Cubs fans with no ties to Chicago. I don't really understand how that happens, but I don't really care either.

I grew up there and then moved away.

I don't think I'm any better than lifelong out-of-towners.

I do sort of look at Dolphins and Cowboys fans who have never lived there (or had parents who did) as odd. Like they were just frontrunners when those teams were good.

But there hasn't been much of an opportunity in the television era for Cubs fans to be frontrunners, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Yeah, that's the way I feel about it too. Andre Dawson was my favorite player, so I took to the Cubs and couldn't quit rooting for them if I wanted to. I've been called a band wagoner because of my like for the Lakers/Redskins, but I grew up watching the Lakers w/my dad who is from Cali and my first football game I ever watched was the '87 Super Bowl as a six year old and did jump on the Skins bandwagon then, but have stuck with them ever since.

What I can't tolerate is the love of college sports teams that are from nowhere around your area, ie. Ark/Okla people that love NC, USC, Mich, Ohio St. Makes me sick. Where I'm from the closest professional teams are six + hours away (except for the Thunder (Sonics) that just moved in), but college teams are right down the road.

Born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, but I'ved lived in Texas for 17 years. I will always be a Chicagoan living in Texas and never a Texan.

I live in Arkansas and I've never met a cub fan that looked down on me.

Of course, I'm 6'4''.

The Red Sox and Yankees can say what they want, but I'm convinced there are more Cub fans across this nation than any other baseball team fans.

I live in Louisiana, and you'd be surprised how many Cub fans there are here. To be honest, folks here in Shreveport are mostly either Cubs fans or Braves fans (more Brave fans).

I could care less what people think. I love the Cubs. I'll be there on 10/24....

I grew up in Central Illinois and was always a Cubs fan.

I think WGN had a major impact on increased Cubfanship, but I would imagine the bigger population of non Illinois ties to Cub fans would be retired folk who just didn't like watching day time soaps and took comfort in day baseball games on WGN.

I would also imagine that some fanship could be handed down through generations because that's who granddad liked. But, I don't really understand why a younger generation nowadays would latch onto the Cubs, since there really aren't nearly as many day games broadcast on WGN.

I think out of area fans are cooler. There's no geographic obligation to root for the Cubs. I'm from the area, but have lived in Pittsburgh for 4 years. I love the Cowboys fans here. Most of them are Cowboys fans because they grew up when Dallas/Steelers was a rivalry and they just like the Cowboys for spite. To me, that is awesome.

I bet a small percentage of those braves fans were fans prior to the early 90s.

I never saw more bandwagoners than after the 1991 season. Wow.

I always liked watching Dale Murphy and Ken Oberkfell, but I cared what happened to the cubs.

I live in Bloomington, Indiana and have never once had a fan from Chicago treat me bad. And we have plenty going to the University. Ran into many in bars. Nobody has ever flinched or stopped talking to me when I tell them I'm a townie. When I walk downtown in my Sandberg jersey no one has ever yelled "YOU'RE NOT A REAL CUBS FAN!". Usually it's "RYNO!!".

I guess that means a Cubs fan is a Cubs fan.

having the ICubs here in des moines is what got me started. My dad took me to a few of the games that the Chicago cubs would come down and play against the ICubs. Those were usually fun. the first year I really watched and got hooked was '84. Jody Davis was my favorite player. I've been a cub fan ever since. Took me 15 years to get to my first game in Wrigley, down the 3-2 in the ninth, my ex-wife is too cold and so we left. My best friend and I were sitting in Mcdonalds, upset cuz we left, when we see on the TV Glenallen Hill tie the game with a huge HR and Grace wins its with a double later that inning. I didn't talk to her all the way back to the hotel.

I don't know if I agree that there are more cub fans than Yankees or Red Sox but I certainly don't disagree. West of the Mississippi there seem to be many more cub fans than anything else. I live in Denver and there are a ton of cubs fans here - most of whom have Chicago roots.

I grew up in Evanston BTW.

OMC - you are absolutely right about the Braves fans around here. When I was growing up, it was the Braves and the Cubs because of TBS and WGN. As we all know, the Braves sucked until the 90's - which is when they all made the exodus out of the woodwork. "Oh, I've loved the Braves since Dale Murphy, etc."

Whatever. My mom is from the Southside, and she and most of my family are Sox fans. I didn't care until I fell in love with the Cubbies in the summer of 89. WGN used to be incredible, and when you could watch every Cub game it sure did help fuel the fire.

I can't believe now that WGN is just as much Sox as it is Cubs. Shameful.

Never really liked the Braves, but did and still do have a fondness for some of the Atlanta Hawks teams of the late '70s.

Wait, what, Dolphins??? Are you talking about the early 70s or something? I mean they were pretty good during the Marino years, but nothing spectacular. BTW, I'm a Dolphins fan and have no ties to Miami. I just started watching them in the 90s because my uncle was a Dolphins fan and for some reason have loved them ever since. I wish I could break the habit...haha. But I did start liking the Bears just a couple years after the Dolphins and have been a diehard Bears fan for about the past 10 years.
