Lou Piniella has done the Mets one favor. Sean Marshall starts Tuesday instead of Rich Harden opposite Johan Santana. Harden goes Thursday, bumping Ted Lilly to Saturday against the Brewers.

I am trying to figure out if this tells us anything about the postseason rotation

So now to finish the season the rotation is:

Marquis

Marshall

Zambrano

Harden

Dempster

Lilly

Marquis/Marshall

I like Marshall getting a start, and I hope he does well, and gets a spot on the postseason roster. I don't think there is another player who goes more underrappreicated then Marshall. Edited by RedFlash

harden has only faced the mets once in his career, and it was a single inning last year.

i suspect lou wants to give the mets as little info about rich as he can.

But we play the Mets on Thursday

I'm guessing Dempster-Zambrano-Harden-Lilly. Then, a Game 5 could be either Dempster or Zambrano, with the other available for relief.

oooooh...i didn't think about dempster being pretty much lights out at home this season

probably a good idea to start him at home then...

i don't know

i really don't think it matters a whole lot what the order is for the top 3...

Nah, doesn't matter - 2.86 ERA, 1.25 WHIP at home; 3.22 and 1.16 on the road.

Damn, was hoping that meant he would completely miss the Mets as you were hoping too.

At least he gets a few extra days off after throwing 110+ last time out.

Do people really think Dempster is a different pitcher at home or something?

The main reason his numbers are a bit better at home than away is because of one disastrous start at Comiskey.

I don't think setting up the rotation around what park he pitches in should be a major priority.

the myth that he's better at home is because he only gets the W at home for the most part, it's like 13 of 17 wins were at home. Just unlucky with run support and such on the road.

I want Dempster to start at home because he can pitch twice in the series (once out of the pen) if he does.

I would go Harden/Dempster/Zambrano/Lilly if I had my druthers.

Regardless of whether or not Z is the "ace" or "#1", Harden has been by far the best starter the Cubs have had this year, and should start game 1, so he'd be available for a game 5.

Plus, if Harden starts game 1, it would prevent Lou from trying to throw somebody on short rest in game 4.

You shouldn't have to worry about bringing a starter out of the pen in an LDS. LCS, maybe, and WS for sure, but it should be an emergency-only scenario in the first round.

Phil Rogers article in the Trib (posted within the last hour) surmises that the change of tomorrow's starter appears to set up the post-season rotation as Dempster, Harden, Z, and then Lilly.

If that's true that would go along with what Z said on the radio last week about wanting to pitch game 3 in the NLDS.

Why does he want that? Oh and I think Dempster is good anywhere, but he has been really good at home.

Outside of one absolutely horrendous start, he's been just as good, if not better, on the road.

Z claimed to want that because it would give him a chance to pitch the series winner.
