August Zambrano is back. What an awful start.

Sup CubsGM? Why aren't you banned yet?

Get a grip, Z is gonna be fine... do you realize he threw a no hitter, or were you too busy with your fake wife?

I saw Z's postgame interview. He looked tired and his voice was hoarse. I'm really sorry to hear about his grandmother, but I do feel better about his start being solely a matter of him being distracted and not prepared to start.

He said he didn't get in until last Thursday night/Friday morning, his legs were really tired so they weren't responding the way they normally would, and said that he wanted to start today because he wanted to be a hero, whatever that means.

So wait, if he just got in, then what the hell was he doing on the mound? Seriously, if this it was a must win game, maybe, but in this case, just give the start to Sean Marshall or someone like that. May as well have let him stay home with his family for the rest of the week,

Uh, I'm not worried, but you talk like it's ridiculous to be concerned. The no hitter was a blip in a sea of bad starts.

Does anyone think the Cubs could do worse than to let him have the rest of the regular season off? He obviously did well after his last extended rest.

Exactly what I was thinking - let Z rest ... except for a few PH appearances to keep him from going stir-crazy on the bench.

The "great quotes" or whatever thread is locked, but complete wastes of time like this one aren't. Okay.

Fully agreed, that could have been one of the great threads of all time. :cray:

If it would have been funny quotes, yes. But it was quickly turning into "Look! This opinion is different from mine! That means it's stupid! Hahahahahaha!! What a moron!" and nothing good would have come from it. The mods were right to lock it.

I'd like to see him get a controlled start next week. Keep the pitch count low, but allow Z to throw some pitches against live hitting to stay sharp.

I finally watched the post game comments last night on the news. I'm going to take Z's story at face value. Nobody's said anything about shoulder pain or discomfort. His grandmother died the day before. He's flying back n' forth from South America. Not a very good way to be prepared to start a baseball game.

Lou's comments were pretty terse. I didn't realize Z had made a display out of it when he was pulled. I hope that whole thing blows over quickly.

Yeah, when I heard about the grandmother thing it made more sense. Also, they said that Z apologized to Lou and it seems all is well.

Thanks for that info. I was curious why he went back to Venezuela. Maybe that was kind of on his mind. He is pretty emotional and all

There is absolutely, positively no reason to have even the slightest worry about a pitcher who came back from an arm tweak, threw 115 pitches then got shelled in his next start with low velocity.

None at all.

That wasn't Carlos Zambrano though.

First, he only threw 110 pitches in the no-hitter.

Second, the velocity yesterday on his fastball? It was his 3rd highest all season, and the highest velocity all year when he was on regular rest. It wasn't even close to low.

Then the reports I read were exaggerated. But still, the need to dismiss anything bad as absolutely unconcerning confuses me.

This is easy to say with hindsight, but I don't think anyone would have blamed him if he had taken bereavement leave to be with his grandmother and get one start in next week. I admire that he wanted be a warrior and make his start, but he did himself and the team no favors by going out in that condition.

The need to make things bad off of no/fabricated evidence is more confusing.

A mistake isn't fabrication, and an utterly horrific start isn't "no."

There is always reason to be concerned when it comes to Z. While I believe he is one of the top 15-20 pitchers in the game, we all know he is far from a sure thing anytime he goes out on the mound. Personally, I am less concerned about his arm than I am about his head. Assuming he starts a game this week, I will want to see what kind of velocity he has in his next game. That will tell is a lot as far as his physical well being.

Pitchers have nightmare games. It happens. I was way more worried about Z being injured when he was pitching fine earlier in the year but his arm slot was all jacked up. Unless you have a guy that looks off, I'm not worried about 1 nightmare start. Same with a hitter. I'm not gonna worry about a nightmare week from a hitter unless the pictures are matching up with it. This is where scouting absolutely has to come into play. Stats are the observed data, scouting comes along to interpret that data and show if there's a reason for it or it's random noise.
