Ed Hochuli, who made the bad call on the fumble in the Denver/SD game, has been graded down because of that game.

That's BS. Yeah, he blew that call terribly. But is it his fault that the NFL has the absurdly terrible rule that incomplete passes aren't reviewable? He's one of the better refs in the league. He got one wrong. It happens.

And I think I'm the last remaining Rams fan. I guess I know how the Lorax felt... (Good God, the Rams are terrible.)

NFL refs are always graded down for bad calls. It's a little silly that this grade-down was reported as news.

I don't think it's too much BS. He made a mistake in a pretty critical situation and probably cost the Chargers the game. With that in mind, I don't have a problem with him getting graded down.

Now, he should still be in line for the playoffs and Super Bowl barring more mistakes. He is still one of the best out there.

It was reported because it was such a high profile missed call. Not sure I like it being reported when no others were, but they reported it because the call came at such a critical time.

But yeah, refs get graded down for missing much more innocuous calls such as holding in the middle of the line - this was no surprise at all.

Bob Sanders out 4-6 weeks!

Here's the link.

Team president Bill Polian said during a taping of his weekly TV show Tuesday night that the league's defensive player of the year could also have arthroscopic "cleanup" surgery on one of his knees while he's recovering from the ankle injury.

"He will be back, that is for sure," Polian told WISH-TV. "At this point we are not sure of the severity, but four to six is the reasonable assumption at this time."

I have to think this is really, really bad news for the Colts defense. Last time they were missing Bob, they were pretty terrible.

You can review incomplete passes. You can't review a play once the ref blows the whistle. The problem was he screwed up by blowing the whistle too soon. It's not the NFL's fault.

Exactly, it's his fault. Had he not blown the whistle that quickly the play would have continued and the Chargers likely win the game.

I think Hochuli's a great ref, but he made a mistake and deserved to get graded down for it.

I actually don't think he's that great, he's just the most well known. I've seen him make plenty of really bad calls. There's a handful of others who are much better.

He's one of the better graded each year because he tends to ref big games. I will say, though, that I don't remember the last Super Bowl he reffed, so he's not in that echelon I suppose.

Patriots-Panthers, I think.

Thanks. I couldn't remember the last time I remember him in one and have no idea where to look.

Wikipedia can be your friend, I guess.

Past Super Bowl crews

Hochuli's done it twice - as Kyle said the Panthers/Pats was his latest SB. He also did SB XXXII between the Packers and Broncos.

I'm still trying to figure to figure out why he blew the whistle. It looked like a fumble right away (i.e. Cutler's arm not going forward) but even if his arm was going forward, the ball looked like it went backwards which would mean it was a lateral and a fumble anyway.

There defense is like terrible without him. Even more so then Mike Brown he is the heart and soul of the defense for the Colts. That's such a big injury

boy i don't think he's a great poster, but that ban seems a little excessive.

Not a clue on that one. I thought it might be an incomplete pass initially, but if I had a whistle I wouldn't have blown it - too questionable.

That's a good point (mentioned by others as well), that he should've let the play finish out, ruled a fumble, then gone back to review it. At least this way, had it been an incomplete pass, nothing would have been lost. As it was, he jumped the gun and killed the play. I guess upon second thought, it was a pretty big screw up by ol' Guns.

I still like him. He and Mike Carey are my favorites, and I'm not really sure why.

Haha, profootballtalk.com does this thing called Ten Texts and they asked Kevin Smith what was his reaction to bringing in Shaun Alexander for a workout.

Q: What was your reaction to the news that they brought in Shaun Alexander for a workout?

A: LOL.

Q: That’s it?

A: Yup, I just laughed.
