Whats a shame.

So I take it we have a spot opening up on the 40 man then.

Well, they definitely have options now. They can cut him and bring up another player with his 40 man spot. They can DL him, and then sneak another player onto the playoff roster using his spot. Or, they could decide they don't need either of those things and do nothing.

That wording of that sentence is really strange though. He returned home and "informed" the general manager that he couldn't pitch anymore? That screams that something is going on behind the scenes.

That was my thought as well. I didn't read the article but it sounded to me like Lieber wasn't happy with his role, and took his ball and went home.

What the hell? He just goes home and calls Jim and tells his arm is sore and he can't pitch? Let's face it, Lieber didn't contribute a damn this year to this team. I think after his latest outing he realized he no longer can be a MLB pitcher.

I think there was a mutual unspoken understanding that he wasn't going to appear in any more games, and that his chance of making the post season roster, even given any injuries, was about 0%. This allows him to graciously bow out, which he deserves.

Like what? I just assumed he realizes he's done and doesn't want to either embarrass himself anymore, or deal with anymore pain.

That's a pity. I saw him two weeks ago at the Kane County Cougars game. He was pitching for class A Peoria Chiefs in his last rehab game. He pitched two pretty good innings and didn't look bad at all.

He may not have been a key, intricate part of the team, but to say he didn't "contribute a damn" to this team is completely wrong.

He posted a 111 ERA+ with a 1.39 WHIP with a 27:6 K:BB ratio.

That's not great, but it's decent enough for a long reliever.

That's a shame... I always liked Lieber. Got the chance to meet him at Wrigley and he signed an autograph for me back during his 20 win season. That last game the other night he didn't pitch bad either. There was a legit single, and then the double wasn't even hit well. The only mistake he made was the pitch that went over the fence. I was rooting for him to get a few scoreless innings under his belt, too. Oh well.

I have been told by the local baseball card shop owner that he frequents his store every once and a while. Perhaps I'll catch him there by chance some day and I'll ask him why he decided to start sucking after teasing us with good pitching for the first few weeks of the season.

Kidding. I wish him the best, in all seriousness. And I really do hope I see him so I can thank him for a job well done (even if it was for those first few weeks)

Sure does, and it goes really well with Randy Wells being called up from Iowa today, ready to be activated in St Louis.

I wish Jon well though, as he's a great guy, doing all he can to help the Cubs.

I was excited when we signed him earlier this year, hoping he'd get a spot in the rotation.

I liked him though. Hopefully he can be successful with whatever he does.
