We're still waiting for official rosters from Iowa and Daytona.

Per the Knoxville News-Sentinel, the Smokies rotation order is set: James Russell will start on opening day, followed by Hung-Wen Chen, Casey Coleman, Jay Jackson and finally Casey Lambert.

Knoxville News-Sentinel[/url]"]Pitchers will be limited to 80-85 pitches in their first start, except Lambert, who was a reliever until a week ago. The lefty probably won't go beyond 60 or 65 pitches.

"All in all, our pitching was pretty steady the whole spring," Sandberg said.

Darwin Barney is penciled in to bath 8th. Brian Schlitter and Blake Parker are the leading candidates to close.

Sandberg on the position players:

"I think we have some speed, but a lot of our at-bats will be contract at-bats," he explained. "Gap-type hitters. I see some action on the bases with guys swinging the bats and making things happen."

Defensively, Sandberg was more than satisfied with the way his team fielded.

"I was very pleased," he smiled and said as he tapped on the side of a wooden bookcase. "The number of errors were pretty low. I like the speed and arms of the outfielders."

OK now that we know they bath in a certain order, could you tell us where he will bat? :D

Who plays 3B?

Hrm...Matulia and Scales have played the most minor league games at 3B. Would be awesome if Fox tried his hand there.

But then who plays 1B? Deeds I guess.

Deeds or Fox or Dubois; I thought I saw Matulia had some 1B playing time too.

Surprised to see Caridad starting instead of Hart.

BA made it sound like the Cubs were dead set on Hart sticking in the pen when they did their top 10 prospects.

The full Daytona roster is out on their web page. The press release with 8 names that accompanied it is also on their web site. As we could surmise from the press release, Andrew Cashner is starting the season in extended spring training.

P:

Alberto Albuquerque

David Cales

Rafael Dolis

James Leverton

Marcos Mateo

Dan McDaniel

Craig Muschko

Jake Muyco

Dustin Sasser

Ryan Searle

Luke Sommer

Steve Vento

Henry Williamson

Dylan Johnston

Drew Rundle

Jonathan Wyatt

Obviously Castro, Gonzalez, Rundle and Searle were surprises though a day or two after we had heard about them, I think the biggest surprise is Dolis being healthy enough to go to Daytona after 1 month of pitching at Peoria two seasons ago.

Leverton skipping Peoria is also a bit of a surprise.

Um...

Is Cashner still hurt or something?

From what I've seen, he's pitching now but his arm is behind everyone else given the missing innings so he has to play catch up in extended.

Posted

Matt Matulia will become a player/coach according to something I read a couple weeks ago. I don't think he will be active once the season starts.

I wonder where Justin Sellers, Robert Hernandez, Marco Carrillo and Luis Bautista are? EST I suppose. I like all four enough to hope that they weren't released! (I know Hernandez wouldn't have been released.)

I personally don't like most of the accelerated moves the Cubs have made. I don't see why they couldn't have started at the appropriate level and been promoted soon after demonstrating success.

I'll check, but i think Carrillo was hurt during ST. Hernandez is staying in extended as is Chris Siegfried (trying a lower arm angle that was working well in spring).

Bautista was on our roster last week for ST games, and since he isnt here and wasn't on Daytona's roster, I'm guessing he is no longer with the organization.

Wow, lots more interesting stuff.

Ascanio in rotation. I know they'd talked about maybe doing that, But I didn't really expect that they would, and with the big club he was doing one-inning relief as usual. He's only started a few games at any level of the minors, I think. I like it. He's got a good arm and some good pitches; what if he does really well? Could be good for us, or good for trade. Back in October I'd kind of assumed we'd have some junker vets in Iowa rotation, Mathes or some other fringy FA's, but Wells is the only one like that. Caridad, Ascanio, Samardz, Atkins, those are all guys young enough that if they perform well, you could have something.

I'd hoped that Cashner would be caught up enough to pitch, so that's disappointing.

But not only Albuquerque but Dolis being healthy enough and rushed all the way up to Daytona, given how little and with such limited success either has ever pitched at A-, I hardly expected them to be at A+. Obviously a week ago I'd hardly have imagined Searle being there, although Nathan already tipped us off on that yesterday.

But looking at that roster, Cales Muyco Sasser Williamson Muschko Sommer and Vento seem like relievers to me.

But who's going to be the starters? Obviously Searle and Leverton. Presumably Mateo will start again, that's three. But that would seem to leave Albuquerque, Dolis, and McDaniel as the main candidates for 4 and 5. McDaniel in rotation, that would be a surprise for sure; and at Daytona, that would be a double surprise. If that happened, and he excelled, I'd be all gaga with enthusiasm for him as a prospect. If it's both AAlb and Dolis, it would be really surprising to have Dolis who's hardly pitched at all and was a wildman supreme when he did to be pitching rotation. I'd have assumed that he'd be lucky to be able to control any pitches, much less the two needed for big-league relief, much less the three or more that a rotation pitcher is expected to have. but think how enthused we'd all get if he was not only in Daytona's rotation but was able to excel there? Would be really cool.

Toonster on BCB mentioned he read an interview in which McDaniel said he expected to be a starter.

Must have missed any discussion of Colvin being bumped back to A+ after a season and a half at AA... looking to fit nicely in the string of recent 1st round releases.

Missed the Robert Hernandez being MIA. Good catch, Wrigley Rat. That's very disappointing.

He's only there because he can't play in the field after Tommy John surgery and A+ is the highest level with a full-time DH.
