Colvin in Daytona? Is he converting to catcher or something? :)

DH while he recovers from TJS. That's one way to get him at bats outside extended spring training sooner, otherwise he won't be cleared for defense till the end of April.

And falcon, I think Cashner is ticketed for Daytona. Obviously the oblique strain might throw a monkey wrench into that.

That AA rotation is really weak, but I can't disagree with it much (except Chen or Mateo in their rotation).

I heard that 7 players were cut from the minor league camp today so the trimming down and re-alignment of rosters has begun.I only heard one name mentioned......Ryan Harvey, 1st round pick out of HS in 2003.Our recent 1st round picks seem to get bogged down in the lower levels.

Wow.

Does that mean that Harvey and the Cubs are done?

yes, the cubs releasing him would definitely signal they are done.

They didn't even try Harvey at Pitcher? What a waste of a pick.
It was pointed out in another thread that Harvey would have needed to agree to becoming a pitcher, and apparently he didn't want to do so.

If that is the case, then Harvey prolly will never see the majors.

So Jeremy Papelbon opens another season in AA, meanwhile, Ed Campusano, who clearly has no future with this organization is in Iowa.

You really think Jeremy Papelbon has a big future with the organization? His mid-80's fastball may let him get by against A and AA hitters but I have my doubts he will be able to consistently get out big league hitters with his stuff. Hopefully he proves me wrong, but as of now I have the feeling that if his last name wasn't Papelbon he wouldn't really be on many people's radar.

Beyond what Illini Iceman said about Papelbon's stuff in relation to getting big league hitters out (which I agree with), Jeremy Papelbon has never thrown a pitch at AA or higher.

Non-Cubs, I know, but Cleveland has sent Matt LaPorta, Aaron Laffey, Jeremy Sowers and Michael Brantley to AAA Columbus. Might be a team worth watching this summer (especially since Kerry Wood will invariably be making some minor league rehab appearances there).

Here is Iowa's lineup yesterday at Fitch, per Arizona Phil (obviously, we can ignore Rich Harden and Koyie Hill):

Arizona Phil / The Cub Reporter[/url]"]Here is today's abridged box score (I-Cubs player only). Note that Valdez and Bautista were temporarily loaned to Iowa from the Boise-Mesa squad after the B-M kids finished their work on Field #4.

1-A Matt Camp, SS 1-3 (3B, RBI, R)

1-B: Jose Valdez, PH-CF: 0-0 (BB, CS)

2-A. Koyie Hill, C: 1-1 (2B, BB)

2-B: Welington Castillo, C 2-2 (HR, 2 RBI)

3-A. Doug Deeds, CF: 1-2 (BB, K)

3-B. Robert Bautista, PH-SS: 0-1

4. Jason Dubois, LF: 0-4 (K)

5. Richie Robnett, RF: 1-3 (3B)

6-A. Koyie Hill, DH #1: 0-1 (K)

6-B. SKIPPED

7. Luis Rivas, 2B: 1-3 (3B, R, K)

8. Kyle Reynolds, 1B:1-3 (3B, R)

9. Shawn McGill, DH #2: 1-3 (RBI, R)

10-A. Koyie Hill, DH #3: 0-1 (K)

10-B. SKIPPED

11. Matt Matulia, 3B: 0-2 (BB)

PITCHERS:

1. Rich Harden - 4.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K (63 pitches - 42 strikes, 0/5 GO/FO)

2. Vince Perkins - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R (1 ER), 0 BB, 0 K (11 pitches - 7 strikes, 2/1 GO/FO)

3. Jason Waddell - 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 GIDP (24 pitches - 14 strikes, 2/3 GO/FO)

4. Rocky Roquet - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 1 K (28 pitches - 16 strikes, 1/1 GO/FO)

5. Matt Smith - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R (1 ER), 2 BB, 0 K, 1 GIDP (21 pitches - 11 strikes, 2/1 GO/FO)

Sam Fuld, Jake Fox, Bobby Scales, and Jose Ascanio will likely join the Iowa group today. I think the biggest thing is that this late in camp, Welington Castillo is still at AAA.

according to cashner, he will start in extended ST.

Due to the oblique injury?

You have Cashner at both Peoria and Daytona. Are you saying he goes EST to Peoria then Daytona or is that a typo? Seems like they'd want to fast track Cashner if they can and start him at Daytona and hope he earns AA by midseason.

Fixed since prolly is not a real word and Harvey not making it needs no qualification.

He has a higher upside than Campusano, whose already been rule 5d and sent back. Hes seemingly been with the organization for 12 years now. Papelbon isnt getting any younger either so he should at least get the chance to see what he can do at AAA. Its not like giving a guy a shot at AAA is a big time investment.
