I don't see any benefit in starting Vitters in Daytona. He didn't hit in Peoria last year in the short time he was there (all of 14 ABs, but still).

Perhaps this is a way to keep him humble. If they start him at Daytona and he struggles they send him down knowing what he needs to work on and then they keep him there until they're happy with his progress. If he's successful then They can give him the end of the year promotion to AA.

The Cubs have been pretty aggressive with top prospects in the past (Corey Patterson) Let's hope they learned something from that experience.

http://thecubreporter.com/2009/02/25/projected-cubs-minor-league-camp-rosters

Minor League Camp doesn't open for another couple of weeks, but here are the projected Cubs Minor League Camp rosters for the five squads (141 players) at Minor League Camp and also the DSL Cubs Reserve Lists (two teams - 70 players).

Players at Minor League Camp are sometimes initially placed one level above where they will likely play that season, and then they either get released or get demoted one level lower once the Cubs start to make cuts and send players to Minor League Camp at Fitch Park from the big league camp at HoHoKam, with an accompanying downward cascade of players from Iowa to Tennessee, Tennessee to Daytona, etc.

And:

PRESENT STATUS UNKNOWN:

Joel Altagracia, 1B-3B

Pedro DeJesus, C

Davy Gregg, OF

Clark Hardman, OF

Justin Rayborn, RHP

Marc Sawyer, 1B

Matt Weber, RHP

Altagracia got the biggest bonus from the Cubs in Latin America last year ($140K).

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

I'm curious about a handful of them, but that's about it. I'll definitely see some games in Peoria this year, but none of those names really excite me. I'm hoping some better names get added to that list.

Remember a bunch of guys will drop down one level as guys in the big league camp get cut and sent to the minors.

I'm a little disappointed to see Rhee back at Peoria... but that's just because of the injuries. If he stays healthy, I wouldn't be surprised to see him make it to the majors sometime in 2010.

I think Peoria is a best case scenario for Rhee. He could easily end up at Boise only. Hopefully his rehab is going well and he'll be ready by June or July.

I think Castro has a good chance at making Peoria, however.

Yeah, I hope/expect Castro at SS at Peoria and Flaherty manning SS at Daytona (I don't think they'll give up on him playing SS this season).

What happens to Nate Samson then? Barney will be at Tennessee, and Flaherty at Daytona and Castro at Peoria leave him no place to play regularly. If they were going to move Flaherty, they might want to consider it now since Daytona doesn't have much in the way of a true 2B prospect lining up there.

It's an interesting logjam. The problem is Flaherty won't play SS at the higher levels and there's a chance that Samson won't either. But I can't blame the Cubs for not wanting to move Flaherty yet - you have to stick with him at SS if there's even a remote chance he can play there since his bat would be so much more valuable there. His bat is ready for Daytona, his glove probably isn't. We'll see if the Cubs are ready to be that aggressive with Flaherty after Tony Thomas struggled so much with the double promotion last season.

I have Nate Samson playing 2B and backing up SS at Daytona (Samson's defense was really bad last year - worse than Flaherty).

I'm honestly willing to dispute that. I saw Samson enough last season in Peoria to think he has the chops to stick at SS. I think his errors were more mental than anything else, since he has the physical and mechanical chops to stick there. It just seemed to me like he was shaky early in the season, but got his act together as time went on and he got more reps.

Frankly, I think the Cubs would be better off with Flaherty at 2B or 3B and Samson at SS.

I would really hope the Cubs don't consider Barney a roadblock for anybody. I'd honestly rather see Ryan Harvey playing there.

I know you and Barney are best buds, but he's not so much worse than Samson that you'd ignore him entirely. Plus, you aren't going to have Samson skip a level with his age and past performance, so it's not really an issue in that case.

Minor League Splits has Samson as an above average defender as well(and Flaherty as a horrendous one).

I have not seen him play, so what you guys have to say is much better than my interpretation of their statistics. Thanks for clearing it up! I think both players (Samson and Flaherty) will be at Daytona this year, so one of them is going to have to change primary positions - it sounds as though most want Flaherty to switch. I just wonder if you consider their value, it might be a tough call moving Flaherty before you know what he's capable of!

I think Samson has a Theriot-like ceiling, maybe a tick better athletically.

Flaherty's a tough one to evaluate. He has good power potential and has shown some nice strike zone judgment. His bat should be good enough to make the majors and stick there, but his eventual position is up in the air.

I agree with what cal says, I don't expect the Cubs to move Flaherty yet. I know it isn't likely, but if it turned out that his SS defense ends up being acceptable, then we'll be glad we left him there. He's potentially got a big-league bat, whether that be at SS or perhaps 2B or 3B.

I could easily be wrong, of course. You don't learn to turn the double play from 2B in a weekend. If his future is going to be 2B, the sooner he moves over the better. Unless he just rocks and comes up and is given 2B as a regular, he'll probably eventually need to play some 3B too. So if he got this year at 2B, that would give him a leg up, then perhaps as soon as next year he could get some 3B besides, and if his defense and bat improves quickly, he could be ready for a bench job in as little as two more seasons or perhaps somewhat longer.

As for Samson, I don't rule him out, Theriot is a reminder that these Barney/Samson types can smetimes become important guys. But the rule of thumb is that you do what's best for the better prospects and do what you have to with the lesser ones. don't decide where Flaherty should play based on Samson; decide where Samson should play based on Flaherty.

Samson isn't likely to ever play in the majors, and if he does he will mostly likely enter the league as a bench guy. So he's going to need to learn be a multi-position guy anyway, no problem having that start this season.

He played some 2B over the past two seasons, so I think the Cubs already have a bit of a jump start on that one.

i've decided that i am really interested in starlin castro. Lord knows the cubs have sucked at developing latin american middle infielders when every other team in baseball has like 20 of them as prospects to at least be decent backup options. castro seems to have a decent grasp of the strike zone and a little pop in his bat too.

I just thought I would put together a list of my guesses for where everyone will end up at to start the 2009 season. I am rarely close, but I like to see how close I can come. Besides, this message board has been silent for awhile.

The order is: C, C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, MIF, CIF, LF, CF, RF, OF's AND SP1-5, CL, RP's.

My opinion is that the infielders and outfielders should be fairly accurate. The relief pitchers might be OK. My starting pitchers don't work well starting in AA and down. I can imagine the Cubs promoting (too fast in my opinion) some starting pitchers from Daytona to Tenn, Peoria to Daytona, etc. Some of the guys who just made the cut will likely be cut then (i.e. Dumas Garcia, Vince Perkins, etc.).

Give me your thoughts. I would assume that the Peoria team could have a hugely different roster based on spring training stats/stuff.

I heard that 7 players were cut from the minor league camp today so the trimming down and re-alignment of rosters has begun.I only heard one name mentioned......Ryan Harvey, 1st round pick out of HS in 2003.Our recent 1st round picks seem to get bogged down in the lower levels.
