Yes, he has been with the team since May and has played very, very well. However, IMO, he became a true Cub today. After he hit his first HR and flung his bat towards Larussa/Cardinals bench and stared in, at that moment, he's one of ours. Yep, Jim Edmonds gets this rivalry. He signed here in May for two reasons:

A chance to win a championship and to stick it to the Cardinals.

If he wasn't hated by Cardinals fans after he signed here, he most certainly is now after what he did today. 8-)

He feels like one of ours after today. We love to beat the Cardinals and not just beat them, but destroy them. After today, Edmonds is one of us in that he feels the same way.. :yahoo:

Eat it, Cardinals fans.

Edmonds’ stellar performance came on the Cardinals’ first visit to Wrigley this season. And La Russa said he didn’t see anything extra from Edmonds after his first homer.

“He’s been a good player his whole career. He had a good day today. I didn’t notice anything and nobody said anything to me about it,” La Russa said. “If you look around, everybody gets excited when they do great. ...That’s just the way the game is today.”

I can't really argue with any of that.

When Edmonds was on the Cardinals I hated him more than just about any pro athlete ever........................I still haven't gotten used to seeing him in a Cub uniform.

While I am convinced that he is a total stroke of a person, I take my hat off to him for the way he's played since joining the Cubs.

When Jimmy got here I was pretty sure I would never be able to cheer for him quite the way I do for the other Cubs.

Boy, was I wrong.

And the OP is right - just like Barrett in the Oswalt incident, Edmonds earned his pinstripes tearing up the Cardinals today and getting a long-overdue curtain call.

It is funny that it takes a Cardinal castoff to come here and put up very Cardinal-like pixie dust numbers.

I can proudly say Im the only one who was all for Edmonds as a bench bat since day 1. Granted, I had no idea how much of an impact hed have, I was just expecting a decent lefty off the bench.

Sulley wanted him as a starting CF.

Give Hendry credit here. He could have very easily given in to the prevailing attitude of Cubs fans, which was eloquently expressed by NSBBers including yours truly, that Edmonds should not have been signed. Instead he took a riskless bet that Edmonds was in a slump in San Diego, would be productive against right-handed batters, and he was absolutely right.

Side note Cubs CFers are the most productive in the NL. They're currently putting up a.372/.481/.853 OBP/SLG/OPS. 1st in the NL in OBP, 2nd in the NL in OPS.

I found some Cubs pixie dust stuffed in a crate from 1908 and put it in Edmonds' Cheerios. Who knew the old stuff still has some potency?

Go, Cubs pixie dust, go!

It just goes to show you that sometimes the management knows better than the fans.

Personally, today didn't cement Jim as a Cub for me. He did that awhile ago.

And for the record, his 2 HR, 5 RBI day against the Crew in their building was more awesome than today. Especially since I was in the stands that day.

jim's numbers as a cub extrapolated to 500 at bats:

.279/.381/.588 36 home runs 109 RBI

Those are actually before today too. If you include today:

.284/.384/.621/1.005, 41 HR, 112 RBI

EVEN BETTER.

So, maybe resign Edmonds to a one or two year deal if he keeps it up?

I would. Felix Pie has thus far proven to be Corey Patterson but with a better attitude. There is nothing about Pie that tells me he'll turn the corner next year.

A lot depends on Piniella as well. If we win it this year, I'd expect Lou to retire with the ultimate feather in his cap. If that happens, Pie has a chance to win the job next year under a new manager. If we don't, Pie won't have a chance. Lou doesn't put up with mediocrity and Pie has proven to be just that.

i'd thank jim very much for his contributions, request he wear a cubs hat to his hall of fame ceremony, and let felix pie actually have a shot at the job next year.

he's been beyond amazing for the cubs this year. that doesn't change the fact that he's still pushing 40, injury prone, and has had declining numbers up until his cubs stint.

Basically, it would be a smart move to do what the Cardinals usually do and recognize when they caught a break with how good a player was for them and not push their luck. And it would be a Cub move to do the opposite (Glendon, Neifi, etc.)

Bringing him back next year would be tantamount to bringing Gaetti back in 99.

Don't do it.

Either sign a good corner OFer and move Fuku to CF or give Pie a shot at it...

(or sign a good CF... I honestly can't think of any who will be out there, though)

But is it really that high risk to sign him to a one year deal? Even if he doesn't perform as well, you still have Johnson (if he is resigned) and Pie.

.178/.265/.233, 103 PA's

.222/.286/.286, 70 PA's

One of these two lines is Pie at the Major League level this year. The other is Edmonds before he was cut from the Padres.
