I've searched but can't find the answer anywhere. Was it ever revealed how much of Edmonds' salary the Cubs are picking up for this year?

just a proration of the league minimum

That's awesome that the Cards are paying for a player who has actually helped a good bit to bury them behind in the division.

Quick question, since I don't know much about compensation picks.

Say Edmonds winds up with 20+HR and 70+ RBI, we obviously let him walk, but we offer arbitration. If he leaves, do we get draft picks back? And if so, why type of FA would Edmonds be if he put up numbers like that? Or would it not matter?

this seems as kind of a 2006 Ray Durham situation.

he's had a rejuvenation but at the end of the day GMs are going to look at his age and it will really temper their expectations for what he has left to contribute. Durham got 3/20 as a 35 year old, and Edmonds being 38, i can't see anything more than 1/9 or 2/15. he'll probably be viewed as a LF also.

It won't matter. The chances the Cubs offer Edmonds arbitration are next to none.

And I think even "next to" none is on the high side. There's no way they'll offer him arbitration; I think there would be a fairly high likelihood he'd accept it if offered.

Next to none probably covers the chance that Edmonds signed before December 1st. If he did that, the Cubs would absolutely offer him arbitration (if he managed to qualify as a B). But that's really the only scenario I can see where they would.

At the same time, I don't see how Edmonds would get any compensation being lumped in with all OF's. He missed the cut last year by a little bit, and replacing his 2006 with his 2008 numbers probably won't help him at all unless he absolutely kills the ball over the next 2 months.

I can't see a scenario where Edmonds becomes such a hot FA signing that a team would risk picks to sign him before December 1st.

I agree with your second paragraph.

Actually the Cubs couldn't offer him arbitration in that case since they'd no longer hold his rights. But the effect is the same; it would be assumed that the Cubs would have offered him arbitration.[/nitpick]

Interesting. It's always said that the team then goes ahead and "offers" him arbitration, so I always thought they had to go through the formal paperwork anyway, even though it would be an automatic decline. Thanks for the clarification on that.

I believe you're right on this CCP. I believe the team still does "offer" arbitration.

He is going to retire, regardless. He wants 400 hr's but that wont happen unless someone offers him a deal for next year.

Let's hope he makes the postseason roster and gets a ring for the cubbies!

Oh, and i believe at the time of the signing, the cubs pay 268K for Edmonds.
