Interesting.

I wonder who they got? or, if this is even real? Seems Neil was talking to Tampa right up until the last minute.

Kinda annoying that we haven't heard who you'll be getting...

Manny Ramirez-OF-Red Sox Jul. 31 - 4:38 pm et

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the Dodgers have acquired Manny Ramirez and the Red Sox have gotten Jason Bay in a three-team deal.

The Pirates will be getting four minor leaguers. Heyman doesn't say whether they're all coming from the Dodgers or if Boston is giving up one or two. If it's all prospects to Pittsburgh, then players like Scott Elbert, James McDonald, Andrew Lambo, Ivan DeJesus Jr. and Austin Gallagher could be involved. The Dodgers might have to Juan Pierre back in center field now, with Ramirez in left and Matt Kemp in right. They've typically used Kemp in center when Andruw Jones has been unavailable, but neither Ramirez nor Pierre makes much sense in right.

Wouldn't be surprised if assistant GMs are heavily involved in the waning minutes. If Bay & Manny were the key pieces, it sounds like it was just a matter of finding a 3rd team with the willingness to give prospects that satisfied Pitt. I doubt they cared if they came from LA or TB.

Jay Jaffe (1:39:45 PM PT): Robo-thal says:

Manny Ramirez + $7 mil to LA

Jason Bay to Boston

Andy LaRoche, Bryan Morris (LA #1 in '06, i think), Craig Hansen and Damien Moss (both BOS) to PIT

Posted (edited)

Brandon Moss not Damien Moss

Laroche is a future .400/.500 hitter though, I like what the Pirates got back in this one.

Bryan Morris is the guy no one probably knows about...

As Jay mentioned he was the Logan White's 2006 1st rounder (26th overall). DRays also drafted him 88th overall in 2005 (if that aint a ringing endorsement by 2 teams who have the best draft history, I don't know what is). He was a 6'3" 175 lb righty CC guy, who started off as a 19 yr old in rookie ball, 11.92 K/9 but 6.03 BB/9 in 60 innings. Looks like 2007 was a lost year (TJS?). In 2008 hes in the midwest league with an 8.18 K/9 and 3.16 BB/9 as a 21 year old.

I agree with Raw. Seems like a decent deal for all involved.

andy laroche blows.

pisses me off that the red sox had a huge problem and teams apparently were more than willing to take him off their hands and allow the red sox to actually improve their team.

I think the Pirates made a good trade, but if I was the Dodgers GM I would have left the Red Sox out of it and added Either to LaRoche and Morris to get Bay. You get a very good hitter (Bay) with good defense who's signed for next year as opposed to an excellent hitter for two months with lousy defense.

Not sure what you're pissed about. The Dodgers got better (for free) and the Pirates probably got as good a haul out of Bay as they were going to get. Certainly traded high on him, given how bad last season was.
