9:42am: I spoke too soon - the Rockies are indeed interested in Washburn. Tim Redding and Josh Fogg are a couple other names on the radar.

Is Jason Marquis really any worse than Josh Fogg?

no, actually jason is much better than fogg

I heard that the hang up on the Washburn deal was that the Yankees would pick up the entire contract, but were not willing to give up a prospect on top of that.

Seattle supposedly wanted Melky Cabrera or Brett Gardner.

Id be glad to send Marquis to them, give Marshall his rotation spot, and then bring up Wuertz or activate Lieber if hes ready to fill out the pen, unless something becomes available soon.

I'd actually be really surprised if they wouldn't be interested in Marquis. The only reason I think they wouldn't be is because of his contract but it's not like the Yankees are hurting for money. What would we be able to get for him though?

A better starter. His name is Sean Marshall.

The difference is that Fogg is on a one year 1 million contract

At this point, Cubs should probably hang onto Marquis. Try to get him thru this year with continued league average numbers and 200+ IP and trade him in the offseason.

Assuming they are just doing whatever they can to not waste money on him next year (ie. trading him for nothing but the ability to clear his contract) that may be the best course of action. However, three consecutive seasons of being left off playoff rosters is going to add to the difficulty in moving him this offseason, and the desperation for pitching by contenders is much higher in July than in November. I think it will be much easier to move him now, and therefore, if they find anybody willing to take his contract, they should.

You know, I actually thought about the playoff roster thing and was going to post a comment about it. A token spot on the playoff roster wouldn't be a bad idea to help his trade value if it gets to that point. The Cubs will probably use the 4 other starters besides him and the only pen arms used will probably be the late inning guys (Wood, Marmol, Shark, Gaudin) and whoever is the LOOGY (Marshall, Eyre, Cotts). That leaves 2 token P spots for Marquis and Howry.

That didn't work last year, but maybe one more year off that contract would help.

I think taking that year off his deal will help a lot. Teams still use stopgaps, and he could be a decent 1-year guy to bridge the gap to a prospect that's not quite ready.

That year also means that he's more than a rental which means that whatever they give doesn't hurt as much.

I believe that Marquis will more likely be a waiver deadline guy since he's more of a "wouldn't mind" than a "must have". Also, they probably want to get another LH reliever before they trade Marquis.

I don't see how it could help all that much. He's still owed $12m, with 10 of that being next year. If money was the issue, it's going to remain an issue in the offseason with the extremely backloaded contract.
