A few mind bogglers from Yost tonight:

- Why leave him in there to face Lee after 120 pitches, especially when Lee's been hitting well and CC's been struggling (for him) all night? Sure, the pen may not be good, but there had to be a better option.

- Why double switch out Hart in the 9th? Is Kapler that much better of a defender? Because Torres likely shouldn't have gone two.

- Why leave in Gagne to face Ward when you have one lefty and the Cubs have no righty PHs? It worked, but that was playing the long odds there.

I know the Brewers' pen is terrible, but I was surprised to see Yost leave Sabathia out there for 120+ pitches.

You don't know much about Ned Yost.

Yeah, I know. Stupid me. :)

Yost is like Dusty on roids. Maybe if we're lucky he'll leave Sheets out there to throw 150 pitches and we can watch the surgeon try to reattach his arm in the bullpen.

Now I know how other teams must have felt when they were facing us when we had Dusty.

good game, Crazy game.

The Brewers lost it themselves and that is the worst part of this loss.

This is how these are suppose to be

The Brewers hardly beat themselves. They blew one defensive play and saved themselves several other runs (of course, a couple were thanks to 3rd base coach Mike Quade). The Cubs had chances all night and barely converted (finally in the 9th). The Brewers had chances in one inning and got the most of it.

Hart didnt come through in the 1st, Hardy and Braun in the 3rd. Hart being called out at 3rd when he was clearly safe sucked because Hall singled the next time. Fukudome's infield single when Weeks could of had him and then the Double Play ball he botched. Torres walking 3 guys in the 9th also sucked, so it was MORE then ONE inning, it was a good game and sometimes the ball doesnt bounce your way. It was a classic game tho.

I can tell you Yost has been riding Torres for multiple innings since he got him. I don't know if that's very smart, but that's what he has been doing.

He's been pretty much over-using CC since the day he arrived. Tonight Yost said "CC's slider was flat tonight" -- I wonder if this could be a sign of some fatigue. Yet, fully knowing this was the case, Yost kept CC out there for 120 more pitches. That tells you how little faith he has in that bullpen.

Absolutely huge win tonight! Tonight's win should at the very least make our odds of getting 3 out of 4 much better. The pitching matchups are definitely in our favor for games 3 and 4, and game 2 is a wash. Hopefully the Brewers' confidence is down quite a bit after the loss with the big guy on the mound.

Ned Yost on C.C.

July 8th Colorado Rockies 6 innings 97 pitches, he was being nice to C.C. that night.

July 13th Cincinnati Reds 9 innings 122 pitches, here we go Ned!

July 18th San Fran Giants 9 innings 110 pitches keep up that pitch count Ned!

July 23rd St Louis Cards 9 innings 106 pitches over 100 for the 3rd time in 4 games as a Brewer

July 28th Chicago Cubs 6 2/3 124 pitches 5 games as a Brewer 4 games over 100 pitches

Average of 112 pitches per outing, not a very good number to be averaging over a 5 game span for your ace pitcher unless you are planning on wearing him down completely come playoff time. He may be a big guy but 110 pitch average is going to wear anyone down.

Its especially stupid that he works Sheets as hard as he does considering his injury history. This may be the second year in a row that Yost is the Cubs MVP. He's already gotten rid of Gallardo for us.

Rickie Weeks seems to be the whipping boy for this one on the Brewerfan boards... I saw this there, and I had to bring it over.

So...the only other baserunners in the entire game that failed to score for the Brewers were "classic Brewer game"? They got 8 baserunners, and 4 scored, 3 on HRs.

Hart wasn't clearly safe, and it was mostly Lee's fault for not letting the ball through, because Fielder would've been out.

Torres was lucky to get out with only giving 2 runs up. Fukudome and Soto both K'd during AB where they swung at balls out of the zone.

The Cubs had 10 left on base, and left 6 of them in scoring position.

No team is going to convert every chance. The Cubs converted a lower % than the Brewers.

Also, why is Yost batting him at the top of the order?

I know this is partly a reaction to two awesome Cubs wins, but I'm really feeling good about the Cubs' chances this year. Z, Dempster, and Harden have been lights-out, and Lilly has been solid. Marquis still sucks, but our would-be playoff rotation is formidable.

In the bullpen, Howry has been awful lately and Lou needs to stop using him when the game is on the line, but I've been really impressed with Gaudin. If Samardzija can keep up being close to as good as he has been, the back of our bullpen is loaded with wood, marmol, gaudin, and shark.

As for the offense, Ward is still close to useless and fukudome has to work out some issues, but I really like fontenot and johnson off the bench. Edmonds and theriot have been pleasant surprises this year, and soriano seems to be back. If lee, ramirez, and soto can completely break out of their slumps, the cubs' offense is close to unstoppable.

So what was CC's official pitch count?

124.

Watching the game on replay now - you know I think you can actually see the curvature of the spacetime continuum between the pitchers mound and 1B when CC and Prince are out there.

No, we didnt come through with runners in scoring position. We had huge errors and Hart WAS clearly safe. It was a good game, but if your going to be a tool about it and not even say it was and say something like "Well we should of won by more" which you should not of. I dont even want to talk to you.

To all good Cub fans, good game. 1 out of 162, but I wish we would of won.

I think he means it was entertaining. He said classic game, not classic Brewer game.

i was POSITIVE the Cubs had lost this game. I was watching it on a delay off the DVR. First, just as I start watching, CT IM's me with one word: "vomit". Then i'm perusing NSBB and I see the Howry rant. I was not expecting a positive outcome at all

Some mind-bogglers by Cub coaching tonight:

- Leaving Howry in to face Branyan when Branyan is (1)a dead-red fastball hitter, (2)has all of his HRs against righties, and (3) has all of his hits against righties. The Cubs did only have three well-rested lefties in the pen, though.

- Sending Lee on the sharp single to shallow, hard-charging Mike Cameron in center. Sending the runner when the OF has the ball before the runner reaches third is a bad idea.

- Not sending Fontenot on Lee's double in the ninth. Worked out in the end, but even Soriano could tell that Fontenot would've scored.

Slightly in Ned Yost's defense, this didn't start when CC went to Milwaukee. Over his last 12 starts going into tonight (8 of which were for cleveland), he had averaged 111 pitches.

You really think the Brewers beat themselves tonight, despite the Cubs having more baserunners, scoring on a lower percentage of opportunities, and failing to convert high-percentage scoring chances in five separate innings, all the while running into outs to prevent more runs?

It's not being a tool about it, it's being objective about it. Being a tool about it would be thinking the Cubs somehow didn't win this game tonight, but only benefitted from the Brewers' miscues. I know you've been on in the past about how the Cubs get all the breaks, but that simply didn't happen tonight, despite the rosy beer-goggles some Brewer fans may make use of.
