Wonder how nice it must feel for someone like Nady to go to a team that actually has a chance of perennially going to the playoffs.

Probably the opposite of how he felt when the 2006 Mets dumped him on the Pirates.

I am a little suprised Hughes is not part of the deal, or is he hurt right now?

He is hurt but he could have been included.

Solid haul considering they're cashing in on a career year with Nady.

I wouldn't have minded seeing Marte come to the Cubs.

in other words, a high ceiling guy in tabata, and a pile of mediocrity. i guess the pirates don't have enough phil dumatraits and franquelis osorias; let's get russ ohlendorf and phil coke too.

SInce they wouldn't include Hughes for Santana this offseason, I doubt they wanted to move him to get Nady and Marte.

No, the Yankees got the better of this deal. Tabata is another one of these overhyped Yankee prospects, and another one of these outfielders whose best skill seems to be being young for their level and holding their own but showing little else. Who was the last prospect to have such a high ranking for so long and actually shown so little?

This is like Melky Cabrera all over again. "He's young so that means he's guaranteed to hit for more power and improve his plate discipline someday." Well, no it doesn't mean that.

Welcome to Marcos Vechionacci V.2. And even if Tabata does become the nice corner outfielder (haven't seen him projected as an ML CF) where does it get them? I'm surprised they couldn't get a real pitcher in this deal.

Agreed. Players like Tabata are best off dealt for after they take their lumps in MLB and their value goes way down. The Pirates should've gone after one of the pitchers at the top of the system. Even more so when you consider the Pirates have no pitching prospects to speak of, and even without Tabata have more center fielders than they know what to do with.

I agree that the Pirates got an overrated prospect but we it is Xavier Nady on a career year. They weren't going to get Hughes.

For Jose Tabata, Ross Ohlendorf, George Kontos, Phil Coke

Not overwhelming, from what I'm reading in the article.

We need pitchers, though. We got 'em.

I wonder who's going to be promoted today - Pearce or McCutch ? I'm betting on Pearce, although he didn't show much. I think this is his audition.

I'd be surprised if we make another trade at this point.

I guess that isn't a great haul for the Bucos, but Nady and Marte aren't exactly top-flight players either. If one or two of those guys turn into solid ML contributors then its a nice trade for them.

dude the guy is 19 years old and playing in AA. coming into this season he had a minor league OBP of .375, and last year he hit .307 with a .371 OBP in the hitter-friendly FSL - while he was 18/19 years old. i don't know if he's gonna be great, but carlos beltran had a .674 OPS at age 20 in the carolina league. tabata has good strike zone discipline, and his power is yet to develop, but again - 19 years old. and trenton is a graveyard for hitters, too. so throwing in the towel on him is pretty foolish.

That's my take. The Yankees didn't give up much, but all they got was Marte (a loogy) and Nady. It's not like they got Jason Bay.

Agreed on Tabata. I still think the Yanks got the better end of this deal, but Tabata doesn't fall into that category of prospects that are overrated just because they're in the Yanks system.

Yeah, I was gonna ask if that was a joke.

This is a good trade for the Pirates, but will really test their minor league instructors. The Pirates not only need pitching depth, but they need some guys that can throw the ball hard, get some Ks and take the heat off their defense some. Not saying power arms are all that matters, but if you are a team that doesn't have a high payroll, you gotta get some pitching that's going to have at least the potential to be more than mediocre. The Pirates have seriously lacked that since Bullington and Van Benschoten's injuries.

Ohlendorf is pretty interesting. He's kinda like Samardzija in some ways. He's a guy that can rush it up to 97 mph coming out of the pen, but struggles with his command of it. Or he can throw a 92-93 mph sinker and get some groundballs. He has an ok curve, but is working on a splitter. Pirates should move him back to starting, and he could be a decent rotation option for them next year. Kontos is another guy that can strike guys out. He probably doesn't have quite the arm of Ohlendorf, but he's a guy that has been solid. He can probably come up in August and September and give the Pirates some decent innings this year. He's never gonna compete for an ERA title, but could be a decent backend rotation option. Coke is similar to Kontos in that he could give the Pirates some solid innings this year out of the rotation. But I think ultimately, they'll look to him to replace Marte's role.

Not very well. Hitting upper 230s, lots of errors. I suspect he won't be a sept. call up.

The players involved are different that previously reported. From Rotoworld:

According to the New York Post, the Pirates will be getting Daniel McCutchen and Jeff Karstens along with Jose Tabata and Ross Ohlendorf from the Yankees for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte.

It was widely reported last night (including by the Post itself) that George Kontos and Phil Coke were in the deal in place of McCutchen and Karstens. This is clearly better for the Pirates. McCutchen is arguably the Yankees' best remaining pitching prospect, though he's not a big upside guy and he doesn't rank with Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy. Karstens isn't much more than middle relief fodder, but neither was Coke.

At first glance, I thought that the Pirates included Andrew McCutcheon and my eyes almost started bleeding.
