Derwood clearly hasn't seen cubette's posts.

i guess i haven't. summary?

I hate Ryne Sandberg.

The minor leagues are supposed to be about the young kids. Helping the kids become major leaguers. He's only out for himself, just like he always was. All he ever cared about was winning - winning - winning.

A real LOSER off-the-field too. No wonder he's headed for a second DIVORCE. LOUSY family man.

The Hall of Fame does not make you a good person. He let it go to his head. I hope to GOD he never ever manages the CUBS. I'll become a Whie Sox fan.

IT'S NICE TO BE IMPORTANT BUT IT'S MORE IMPORTANT TO BE NICE!!!!

Since Ryno wasn't there, why the heck is his name coming up in this thread?

He texted him and told him to do it, duh.

Do you think the Cubs will have a "Throw the ball at a fan" night when Ryno is in town?

As someone mentioned earlier, thank God this kid didn't have a bat.

Actually, he did. If you watch the end of the 5 minute clip that was linked earlier this thread, you see him getting angry at the crowd and he gets restrained (full bear hug) by one of his teammates and he has a bat in his hands!!!

Yeah, that was not a pretty sight. I think he just pitched his final game in this country. Between throwing the ball at a high rate of speed in the general direction of innocent bystanders (ballplayers or fans alike) and threatening to attack fans with a baseball bat in his hands, he's done.

I remembered reading somewhere last night that somebody in the crowd threw a large pop/beer at Castillo, which caused Castillo to turn around and threaten the fan with a bat.

The Chiefs' acting manager was Carmelo Martinez? Wow, now there's a blast from the past.
He's currently the Cubs' Latin America Field Coordinator. He's filling in as Peoria manager while Sandberg is in Cooperstown for the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.

For those of you wondering, no, Julio Castillo is not much of a prospect.

Even if he were, there's no reason he shouldn't be kicked off the team for that. That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. Who in their right mind would throw a baseball at someone from 5 feet away?

I'm actually glad it hit a fan because that means more will be done to him. Just completely insane.

Assult with a deadly weapon might be an option. He better hope the fan is ok.

The fan is expected to be ok.

I still think he's got a whopper of a lawsuit against Castillo (and perhaps the Chiefs) if he chooses to pursue it.

I'll say.

That fan will never have to pay for Peoria Chiefs tickets again, if he ever chooses to attend another game.

The game was actually at Dayton, so he's probably not a Chiefs' fan to start with.

"We'll make sure the punishment fits the crime," said Oneri Fleita, vice president of player personnel. "These things are not condoned by the organization.

"I can assure you, it's not tolerated and not condoned," Fleita said. "We're trying to develop winning type players, and those actions are not those of winning players."

Castillo, 20, was arrested and charged with felonious assault after firing a baseball into the stands behind the Dayton dugout just as the brawl began. The ball struck a fan, who had to be removed on a stretcher and taken to a hospital. The fan has since been released. Castillo was held overnight in a Montgomery County jail, with bond set at $50,000.

"This is in no way, shape or form the way our players are supposed to act," Cubs farm director Oneri Fleita said.

Three Peoria hitters were hit by pitches during Wednesday night's series opener, and the situation didn't take long to escalate on Thursday. Dayton starter Kyle Lotzkar plunked Peoria's Nate Samson, the second hitter of the game. In the bottom of the first inning, Castillo hit Zach Cozart, Dayton's second hitter, in the head. Cozart had to be removed from the game.

Fleita said that makeup has not been a concern with Castillo before.

The two teams are still awaiting disciplinary action from Midwest League president George Spelius. The timing of the incident is especially difficult for Peoria, which is scheduled to play a game at Wrigley Field on Tuesday, an event that was expected to be a celebration of Sandberg's return.

in case anyone cares, this is basically THE talk in dayton. this is the most exciting thing to happen to this town since the wright brothers were tinkering around in the local bike shop.

That ball that Castillo threw hit the fan in the forehead. He is really lucky that so far he doesn't seem to be too seriously injured.

Well it was reported that the ball hit him in the head. If a 90 MPH ball hits you in the head w/o a helmet and your fine then you are extremely lucky regardless.

But I understand what your saying, lucky nonetheless. It seems to be a terrible situation that turned out OK by the grace of God.

PS - I haven't read the last few posts but I'm having a hard time giving any blame to Ryno in this. It's one thing to facilitate aggression with your players, it's another thing to motivate a player to do what Castillo did. That is an isolated incident with an imbalanced player. I find it hard to blame Sandberg.

Off topic to the subject at hand, but the Wright brothers first took flight at Kill Devil Hills, NC.

Not sure why Dayton, OH keeps trying to steal our thunder... :-k
